Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" is a good book that explains some of the basic concepts of photography, including how ISO, shutter speed, and f/stop all work together.

But it's better to get the exposure "correct" from the start....

The camera underexposed because it tries to render everything ~18% grey, so snow will come out underexposed and a black cat will come out overexposed. That is why we use exposure compensation if we're in one of the (Semi)Automatic modes such as Av, Tv, or P.
