This is my friend Tommy's EVO VIII. He's an avid Evo enthusiast (www.tommysevo.com (external link)) He recently just sold an EVO III RS. WICKED rare.

Anywho here's the shots;

Any C&C would be greatly appreciated. (constrained with time and space as it was almost 15 degrees out and he just got the car detailed for storage for the winter so he wanted to keep it in the garage, and I don't own a vagabond for my lights)

really nice cars, but the photos don't do anything for me. the location is super bland (not your fault, obviously) and...yeah. they just look like snapshots to me.

maybe post a few of them on here as images so you'll get more comments!

Yeah, the location kind of stunk. Anything to use in the future to make them more interesting?

if it were me, i'd have maybe focused on some cool detail shots. the whole car looks really good, but it's going to be really hard to make any shot look good with that location. i would've done some good interior shots and some nice detail shots.

maybe also use a fast shutter speed with the softboxes to create the "infiniti-like" look of everything else being dark while the car's lines are lit up. does that make sense at all? haha.

This is begging to be shot outside or in a proper studio setting. The location kills it imho but not bad for what you were working with. You controlled hotspot pretty well. I have a tendency to be a perfectionist when it comes to car shots so i usually go over and clean up any scrathes in the paint that stick out.

There are some distracting elements you could have probably removed if this was the only place to shoot the car (ie paint cans). Slightly offtopic, evo's should be driven year round!

I know, I'd love to get this thing in a studio. The plans he has for it over the winter are insane though. CCW Classics (18x10 in the rear) cage, evo XI rear bumper, A LOT of JDM parts, carbon fiber roof, gutted interior...it's more or less going to be a show car.

doh! I need to remember to remove things like that. I tend to focus mostly on the car with automotive stuff- it's definitely my weakest point I think. I agree! haha. But- as I said, this is his gargage queen. He might be picking up another one to daily. :D (wish i had that option.)

Duly noted- thank you! I'll certainly take that into consideration for future shoots. Any suggestions on how to accomplish interior shots? I tried one or two but they seem kinda hard to pull off.

for interior shots, i usually use 2 bare off camera flashes. put one in the passenger seat facing the ceiling, and one on the side of the driver's seat. mess with the power from 1/4 to full on both until you get results you like.

if you only have 1 flash, you can do the same, just take one at a time and layer them in post.

here are the results of one of my shots using said technique (this was shot in a garage as well...just try to make the bad scenery disappear!):

When I look at these photos it seems like you're taking photos to sell it on autotrader. When you get the chance, take it outside and get some serious shooting down. The weather I know is def a factor for you because I just can't do a photoshoot in frigid weather.

Thing is- I only have one flash, but it's a sigma flash that isn't compatible with my Cactus trigger/receivers. is there anyway I could light the interior using the strobes with softboxes, or would slaves be my best option?

Thank you for the response :D

@thepogione- That was a little harsh.

I plan on it, he's got 20k he's going to be dropping in this before spring hits, these are just some teaser before shots.

Yours look better than his offerings on his photo stream so don't feel too bad about what he says haha. Honestly though, I think you'd kill it in another setting. It seems like you have most of it down, it just needs to be combined with a better location and it would be an awesome set. People just need to watch how they word criticism here. I understand it's an open forum but that nonsense just isn't called for and doesn't help you in any way. I've seen some interesting ways to light interiors but your best bet, if you plan to shoot more interiors, is to invest in some cheaper flashes like the Yongnuo YN460ii's and an RF602 trigger/receiver. They're cheap enough that it's worth the risk of not liking them and selling them on here.

hahaha thanks man, means a lot. :D

I agree completely...I think some people just word criticism harsher than others.

yeah I can't wait till he's all done with it. I've got an empty warehouse lined up with some legit artwork graffiti (not that city gang-tagging nonsense) and by then I'll have an alienbee set up with some sweet stuff :D

I might invest in those flashes and triggers soon. I'd love to experiment with gels and the like as well. Thanks for your advice.

Anything to use in the future to make them more interesting?

The best thing for cars is to put the light on something else that will reflect in it. Too bad that the walls aren't painted. See this, & the links in my Sig, and...

Apologies if my comment was harsh about the autotrader one, I've gotten harsher comments compared to the one I've said... Actually I didn't even know that was harsh! I love the Evo's and always have.. Keeping it cramped in like that kinda made me say "What the!?!? Take it somewhere else!!!!!"
