Walking through one of our parks, this little guy surprised me:

It looks alright here, but when I do a 100% crop it seems abysmally... disgusting. Granted I was shooting at 1/160, f5.6, iso 100, and all the way out at 400mm. To get it sharper should I have a higher fstop? Like f8 maybe? I haven't tried shooting in RAW yet, as I have little to no experience with PP. I did some on this capture, but not much (contrast, tone and color).

Here is a 100% crop:

Any suggestions? I haven't ruled out that it may be my dismal camera body (dear Santa, please bring me a 7D).

thanks, b-rice

I guess handshake blur, you should try to have the shutter speed as high as you focal lenght, at 400mm atleast 1/400 shutter speed

Mkay. Guess the IS on my 100-400 can only do so much haha ;)

The only problem with that is I would have had to bump the ISO much higher. I guess the shot was at 100 iso, so maybe I could have gone higher there and in turn bumped up the shutter speed.

I think it can be misplaced focus... Also can be your shaky hands, just because the lens has IS, it doesn't mean you will not take any blurry shots.
Happens.. especially when you have it at 400mm. As said before, try to increase shutter speed next time.

The 100-400 is probably not the best lens for low light. All you can do is the best you can with what you have (whether it‘s equipment or lighting) especially when an opportunity suddenly presents itself. As suggested your shutter speed should match your focal length as a rule of thumb. If that means increasing your ISO that’s what you should do.

The deer is underexposed. If you bring up just the deer it doesn't look half bad.

Simple solution is don't do 100% crops......
