Will the 24-105 f4 do as good a job with indoor flash as the 24-70 f2.8

Flash will negate the benefit of the 24-105's IS to some degree. If you are shooting a lot indoors aperture matters and the larger and heavier 24-70 will probably be a better fit, but for a walk around lens the 24-105 can't be beat. Just depends on what you need and mostly shoot.

The ratio of fill to available is dictated by the flash power, not the lens aperture.

Yes but for a given shutter speed you can shoot in a 1 stop darker ambient with f/2.8 vs f/4. - provided the DOF works for you Richard

In these situations, the faster lens doesn't help at all because it will need to be stopped down to make sure that none of that crappy orange light infects the nice clean light from the flash. You can either drag the shutter or using a higher ISO to allow more ambient light to fill. One Imaging Photography

JeffreyG "my bits and pieces are all hard" More info | Dec 16, 2010 16:41 | #15 If the room is small I will usually light the whole room with the flash. In this case I typically use f/5.6 or so and thus the lighter weight and greater range of the 24-105 is preferred. My personal stuff:http://www.flickr.com/photos/jngirbach/sets/
