I just got my Canon 55-250mm refurbished lens straight from canon.

When auto focus is on when the motor is not moving the lens it makes a faint clicking noise which can still be heard within a foot or two of the camera.

Also when using manual focus, you hear the noise of you forcefully moving the motor. Is this normal?

This does not occur with the kit 18-55mm lens

It's the IS motor(s). Pretty loud in this lens. Don't worry about it.

The focus ring doesn't completely disengage from all the gears when you flick it to MF, but the sprocket that's directly driven by the little DC motor is disengaged so you're not spinning the motor at all. You're just hearing plastic gears whizzing, it's nothing to worry about it just gives the focus ring a bit of resistance to make it feel nicer. At least I'm pretty sure that's what's happening.

+1 IS
Pretty easy to test: turn off the IS and see if you can still hear it.

Oh ok, thanks.

I just found it odd because I dont notice any noises out of the 18-55mm. Also the manual focus on the 18-55mm is very smooth and I dont hear it turning anything.
