Well, I thought I got the shoe right on the edge, but I guess I did maybe miss a millimeter of his boot. Oops. Thanks for the nod and for the challenge!

John, the pine branch & snow made me a little cold. Great detail on the shot.
Jason, have we seen that shot before? It looked a little familiar, but it's still a cool macro shot. Gotta love those primary colors!

The new challenge is up. I'm sure you all can find a suitable subject for Paper

Merry Christmas to everyone!! I hope Santa is good to you all. :D:D

Excellent choice, Monty. John, nice lighting but it still looks chilly. Yeah, sorry for the rehash from the archives, which was only one of two total related to the holiday. The Sigma is still out...

Jason C

The Sigma may be sold tomorrow. Not that I was planning on selling it, however, a friend of the gentleman I loaned it too wants it bad. As a macro lens, the Sigma is absolutely incredible. But I also bought it for medium telephoto captures and it does not do it for me here. AF is spotty for longer compositions, not to mention macro slow (which I knew this going in), and the Sigma's IQ for longer shots lags far behind my 70-200/4 L at equal f stops.

So, I may sell the Sigma which in turn will take me out of the Macro Speed Challenge for now. I've got 12 hours to decide...

Jason, I have 2 words for you if you decide to sell the Siggy...extension tubes (external link)! They come in handy even for the longer lenses when you want to get closer to something. Seriously, you've made some great contributions to the macro challenges, and I'd miss seeing your work. Do what you need to for your gear, but if you do sell, think about "alternatives" for staying in the macro challenges. ;)

BTW, I have some bad kittehs! It's already Christmas for them with all the "goodies" to play with on and in the tree. They even try to open presents that aren't theirs!

The Sigma is sold, but I gave the buyer a 1 week trial period.

John, thank you. I found that the challenge of macro to be good lighting, while not blowing highlights nor loosing shadow detail. Very delicate balance when shooting such small apertures.

Lisa, I had a set of Kenkos before the Sigma and they worked well. Maybe in the future I'll pick up some cheapy tubes. What I really need to do now is renew my CPS membership, and get more ink and paper for my printer.

I'll participate in the Macro challenge in the future if I get those cheap tubes, and maybe toss in an archive shot here and there.

Thanks all for the stiff competition, and helping me develop better photographic skills!
