i was wondering what people charge for prints? and what goes into consideration when working out what price to sell them for.

i'm going to be taken alot more professional(heh) shots of cars during the cruises i attend, and i get a good 1000 views of my gallery after the event, and people are always saying "oh, theres my car" etc, - but with better photos, where i try and get people out of the way, be prepared, get all those shots people love. i want to offer prints.. i have no idea what it costs for me to print them
i'm guessing i'll goto a photo printing store and get them to print it off for me.

how much do you charge? - why?
how much does it cost for you to print them? - yourself or a photo store?
what sizes would i offer? - prices?
glossy i'm guessing?

i have a half decent printer, and i've printed photos off it before using photo gloss paper, they turned out fairly good.. would that be an option?

how do you give your photos to the store to get them printed? RAW? - JPEG? - CD?

and any other questions you can think of answering for all the other people reading this thread

thanks

ps; please state which currency your prices are so i can figure out how much it is in AU dollars

I send my prints off to a lab and have them printed there (they accept Jpeg in sRGB for the ease of it). I have a price list which includes the price for my editing the images, I'm not too expensive.

Some formats my lab offers doesn't come in either matte or glossy, so some options aren't available, but they are getting there, so even 10 x 15 cm prints can now be chosen in glossy or matte.

Here's my pricelist (in Sweden including VAT, but calculated for approx AU dollars):

10 x 15 cm - approx 5.95 AUD
13 x 18 cm - approx 11.90 AUD
15 x 21 cm - approx 12.75 AUD
18 x 24 cm - approx 18.70 AUD
21 x 30 cm - approx 27.20 AUD
24 x 30 cm - approx 34.00 AUD
30 x 45 cm - approx 71.40 AUD
50 x 75 cm - approx 119.00 AUD
70 x 100 cm - approx 212.55 AUD

Since I don't have an exact currency exchange table, this are nearly the AUD as I could get. (Now lets have fun and see how many can convert that to USD or CND or Euro) :D

Price: No simple formula. In a business, you have to figure out the value of the total time you spend on a job, and how much you want to earn for that time. Then add in costs (rent, processing, film, other materials, other overhead). Your costs are likely different than where I live (high rent, high overhead).
Different business pricing if you assume a 'shooting fee' plus 'per-print charges', or if it is 'all in one package' like a wedding package 'shooting, proofes, and with 35 8x10s included'.

In the example you cite, where onlookers want to buy a copy of a photo you took, I would consider what the buyer market will bear...no point in asking US$25 for 8x10 if they are 'cheap tourists', if you will see more prints at US$15 for more total money than fewer prints at $25! Consider what someone would pay if they simply brought in a negative to their local processor and asked for the same size print, then add some markup for your 'shooting fee' (profit). Covering some of your usual photographic expenses plus covering printing costs may be all you are seeking, rather than trying to earn a living from your activity!

Self print vs. store print...depends on your store prices. I can get prints made for about the same cost as printing my own on a printer at home (paper and ink costs), but your situation may be different. Since mine are same cost, why bother my time printing, when I can get the final prints mailed to me after sending on-line print order?!

I don't sell small prints. I give them the forum URL & let them take them off the site, which will explain why I use some wierd proportioned crops. :D
This one in 12X18" went for $150US. (My cost, besides time, was $3US).
