Not for me though I like the light on the rest of the shot. Back light is great but white will obliterate most everything else in an image since it is the strongest draw in the eye due to survival instincts.

Blinding white light just detracts from the image - what is it trying to "say"?

For me yes and no, not completely but I think it would be less exciting without it and more traditional. Which may or not be a good thing, I'm not sure what the intended purposes are. I think a mid ground would have been better, a smaller highlight or something. Otherwise it's fine, except maybe fix the background up on the right corner :)

Doesn't work for me...the light is way too blinding. If it was a dimly lit light becoming a round bokehlicious blob, I would have preferred that...and to the side not next to his face..

The light really does not suit this otherwise really nice photo. If it was more hidden behind his neck/head it would be a super backlit.....as it is, it looks like you were trying too hard to go artsy.

Thank you all for your comments -- very helpful.

My "client" is my 11 year old son in the picture... :D

Here's a different version, less blinding:

Now you're talking SYS - 100% better.
Loose the purple frame and use the original background and it would win prizes.
BTW - I also prefer this pose of your son......just super.

The second is pretty amazing, the first as you're probably aware doesn't quite work.

First doesn't work for me.

The second works pretty good. I'd just get rid of the purple bleed on his right shoulder.

The light source in #1 is too much -- if it was less bright and maybe tinted yellow a bit it might work better.

#2 is good
