Afaik, the old 18-270 was one of the best superzooms, so with any luck, the new version will be at least as good. Just by looking at the specs, they did a great job getting the size down even further. If I didn't already have too many lenses, I'd get one of these as a small travel zoom...
Just wait on for an early review or gamble and pre-order as soon as it'll be available.

I have the 18-270 VC, and enjoying it very much on my 30D. Great walk around lens. As I am also new to photography, but think that you can't go wrong with the new version. I like the ability to go to a wide angle to a zoom in one lens. Great build quality also on the one I have. The only draw back I have with it is the lens creep and also while zooming the ring has a stiff point. But also heard they took care of that in the new version. Just my $.00002.

Thanks for alerting me to this new lens. I have been looking at the 18-270 mk1.

This is a bit overpriced at the moment, suppose i will have to wait a few months for it to come down.

Alright gang - all things aside, I JUST ordered the current lens (18-270 Di II VC) only to find out they released the new version (PZD). So my dilemma... Do I?

A) Keep the current 18-270 lens available now, cost of 629 (actually found it for 599 with FREE shipping) +150 rebate (until 12/31/10) for total cost of $450.
B) Return the lens and purchase the new PZD version (smaller, lighter, faster, etc) for a total cost of $650.

Savings: $200.

I have read mixed things about the motor used in the new lens. But if at this point, and I don't need it tomorrow, would smaller, lighter, faster but $200 more be the way to go? Still includes the 6-year warranty.

My gut says spend the extra now for the newer technology, but it's also "unproven" technology.

I dont buy the unproven tech line, it must have gone through product testing plus other Tamron lenses use this tech too.

When i tested the older 18-270 focusing was fine, and i didnt notice too much difference between my USM driven canon lens and the Tamron, it was just image quality that was the sticking factor.

Benefits for the new lens is that its got a smaller filter thread so it will be cheaper to buy filters for, its lighter and smaller. If you bought an SLR then you wouldnt really be that bothered about a smaller lens or something thats lighter, so its just the cost of the filters.

The rebates are not available in the UK but if they were, then providing image quality was the same or better then i would stick with the cheaper version, but remember its a new lens out so it will be over priced for a few months.

The only problem some have noted with the smaller lens diameter is that it probably will vignette more and/or it will become slower quicker (will switch to a smaller aperature at a shorter focal length than the old 18-270).

Looks like an interesting option for someone with a Rebel who wants a small / light / versatile travel solution. A T2i paired with this and maybe a one small, fast prime would suffice for a lot of trips when a load of gear isn't practical.

What are the odds the new lens hits showroom floors right after 12/31/10...............when the rebate ends for the old one?
+23% difference for what will likely be a negligible difference between the lenses and no increase in IQ? I go for the get it right now and save $200 clams.
