I am trying to make a picture cd that will play in a DVD player that will run a slideshow with music in the background. I have seen these before , but have never made one. Does anyone have any insight on software to use. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD. I like it and you can add other things like rolling credits, movie clips, etc. I know you can do a lot more w/ that package than make slideshows but that is what I bought it for and it works very well for me.

Hope this helps.

Luminous Landscape had a review of one that they really liked. Had the "ken burnes" effects where you could slowly zoom and pan across the photos. I have not tried it yet, but I will be buying it.

Here's a link to one that I have and love it. I've tried different ones and always come back to ProShow, I have put together slide-shows for people and they love them. It's really easy to use and not as complicated as most out there.
It's kind of expensive but Well worth it.

Well the first question is:

What exactly is a picture CD?
There is a VCD, an S-VCD, or a program that auto starts a group of pictures when inserted into a Windows based PC)

I think that would be more the challenge as no PC or Mac plays everything native.

For the movies themselves, I have always been fan of Photo to Movie (external link) on the Mac. Their sub-pixel rendering is great and I see they have a Windows version now.

I've had good luck with Photodex's ProShow Gold program. I've done a couple of weddings and local events that came out well and got alot of complements. It has a good number of effects and the ability to add music and text captions. There is a demo that can be downloaded to try out. If you do make slideshows with the intent to sell or distribute some way, just be aware of copyright laws regarding any music you may use on it.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

I always use MemoriesOnTV. It works great for me, is easy to use, and not expensive at all.

It's really nice for people when you compose a DVD (or SVCD, or VCD) slideshow. It's like watching a movie but even better than that. Less boring than most homemade movies.

If you have one of the CD/DVD burning suites (Nero, Roxio, Sonic, etc.), you probably have the software you need to make a slideshow already. I've used Roxio and it works fine. I've also heard that Photostory (free MS download) works quite well also.

Thanks for all the great tips. I have downloaded a copy of Photostory that I am going to try this weekend. If that is not customizable enough I will try some of the other recommended programs..

My DVD Player automatically plays a slide show of any CD onto which you have copied jpg files. It does this automatically when the CD is inserted. No matter what is on the CD, if finds all the jpg files and lines them up in a slide show. The interval can be adjusted. The DVD player cost about $40 at Radio Shack and is called CyberHome. This DVD player will also play MP3 files on a CD.

If you want to be able to play on "ANY" DVD player, including older models that do not have all the latest features, then I recommend using Nero Burns ROM, because it has all of the modes you could want, including VCD and S-VCD as well as DVD burning. Every DVD burner that I have purchased has its own idea of what kind of authoring tools you need. They all work fine.

For most needs the Windows Movie Maker program, which is coming on new computers as part of Windows XP is more than adequate for producing Video DVD's from either video clips or still images or mixtures of the two.

I put together my own simple slideshow method:

1. Download this zip file (external link)
2. Extract it somewhere on your hard disk and delete the temporary file in the "images" folder.
3. Fill the "images" folder with your slides in virtually any file format.
4. Test it by double-clicking on slideshow.bat.
5. Write the whole lot to CD/DVD so that the top level directory is the one that contains "images", "irfanview", "autorun.inf", "slideshow.bat"

The slideshow will auto-play when you insert the disc. Use the right mouse button to go forward and the left to go back.

To create a new slideshow, delete everything in the images folder and repeat from step (3).

If you have a valid copy of Windows XP, you can get Photo Story 3 for free. A link is available from the web site in my sig. There are also tutorials there if you need help getting started.
