I Have only seen a woodpecker in books, never seen one with my own eyes...

Since i set up my feeding station 4 months ago, i have had quite a few birds visit, a few weeks ago, my wife comes home for lunch and spots a woodpecker on my feeder!

Today i have the day of, this morning i just popped into the kitchen and there he was! Gobsmaked i got my camera out my bag quick time!!

It was slightly sunny here in the UK, had a nice orange glow! With my 7D on rapid fire i got the first image...

A hour later, it is snowing here, and ill be dammed he come back!

26 years, i have never seen one, in the space of a hour, i have a shot of him in the sun and in the snow!

I Am Over the moon!

The images are slightly soft as i shot through a window on both, do i care...? :D

What you think otherwise??

I think you're very lucky! I've only ever seen one woodpecker near my house about two years ago, and I got a rubbish shot of it. These are lovely, the second one is really striking and you are right to be over the moon! Well done.

Huge congrats on finally seeing and capturing one Ben. It's always such a thrill when there's one that you've wished for.. drop in for a visit. Nicely done.

Thanks all, hes been back 6 times today....!

I just drilled some holes in the upright branch i built, and stuffed in some peanut butter for him! My bestfriend who also popped round today has never seen one and about an hour ago we looked and yep he was there!

Its magical!

My longest lens is a Canon 70-200mm IS L USM, and im around 6-8 meters away from shooting, i might make a mini hide and get closer for some full crop images!

I dont want to push my luck and drive him away as there skitty birds! Plus his eye sight is 20/20!

Nice shots - I'm in a similar situation, I only seem to get blue tits, great tits, robins, blackbirds and starlings in my back garden.....with not even a sniff of even a finch !
Then I looked out earlier in the week and found two goldfinches and a greenfinch feeding happily, and they've been back each day since so I'm well chuffed ! I won't be holding my breath until I get a woodpecker like yours, though.

All I need now is a decent picture of them...............

Congrats on your first woodpecker! It's all the more special that its coming to your feeders, in the area i live you can only see them if you go into woodlands and look for them scooting about on the branches.
