Still getting up to speed. Can't wait for our kids to play in a better lit gym. Unfortunately, this is about as good as it gets at home but what I'm able to get is about what I see during the game.

1. Liked the DOF on this one. Shot went in.

IMAGE: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/dsnyder160/IMG_0433.jpg

2. The kids (opposing fans) in the BG make this shot. The 3-point attempt was good. HS sports are a riot to be around.

IMAGE: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/dsnyder160/IMG_0329.jpg

3. Looks like a clean block, but they gave him 2 from the foul line.

IMAGE: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/dsnyder160/IMG_0327.jpg

4. Rebound and the putback for 2. From the JV game.

IMAGE: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/dsnyder160/IMG_0277.jpg

5. This was the NBA equal of a "Flagrant 2" foul on the white team player. No. 33 didn't let go and pulled the player down flat on his back. Pretty scary. What's worse, it was #33's 2nd flagrant foul on the same player. Home coach was calling for an immediate ejection of the player. Not sure what the HS rule is, but he was allowed to stay in the game.

Thanks for looking. As mentioned, the boys should be hitting the road to play in some better gyms which hopefully means better light and better shots. We'll see. Could be the guy shooting!

Nice job with these Dave. Caught some good action. Good turnout at your games. On 3. looks like #32 got him with the body :)

An opposing player was called for a flagrant foul at my son's last game late in the 4th (same example, player going up for an easy two). Turned the tide of the game. Our team went from being down a couple points to winning by ten.

Good for your son's team! Our guys didn't win this night. The purple team thought it was a rugby match or something. Our guys didn't handle it well! Your call is probably correct on #3. Looks like #32 was leaning into the shooter.

Thanks for the kind words on the shots. Getting better action 3 games into the season so far!

Thanks Mark. Gets me outta the house and keeps me out of trouble! And as mentioned, the kids in the student fan sections (both teams) are a real hoot!

what are the reasons for the amount of noise in your picture? also which program can reduce it the best?

i recently shot a HS ball game myself with a 40D//18-135 3.5-5.6 and results werent as great as i wanted. had to shoot at 1600iso to capture the speed.

FYI...you are not going to get very good shots with the 18-135mm for indoor basketball...it is way to slow, you need a minimum f/2.8.......

Go out and get yourself a 85mm f/1.8....

Mark2009 is correct. A good used 85mm f1.8 will cost you about $350. Take a look at KEH.com for some good used gear. That's where I got my 85mm f1.8 and I love it! Super-D-Duper sharp and fast! A great B-Ball lens on a crop from the corners or the baseline at the 3 point line.

Agree with the others here, stayhumble--the 85 f/1.8 is a very solid 'go-to' lens for shooting basketball indoors without any supplemental lighting.

All the shots in this post were taken with a 7D and that same lens.

Noise? These aren't really too bad. I've done no NR to them at all. However, I do have a tool called Neat Image that is designed to reduce noise to a minimum in high-noise shots. IMO, those that I posted aren't really bad enough in that category to even run Neat Image on them.

In High School basketball (NFHS rules), there is an "intentional" foul and a "flagrant" foul. In both cases the shooter gets two shots (even if the basket is made - if he's able to get the shot off / would be three shots if fouled while attempting a 3-pointer) and the team gets the ball for a throw in nearest the spot of the foul (not neccessarily at half-court). The player called for the "intentional" is allowed to stay in the game and this foul is recorded as one of the five fouls a player is alloted before being disqualifed.
If a "flagrant" foul is called, same shooting and out of bounds rules apply but the player called for the "flagrant" is ejected from the game.

In my opinion, definitly intentional and a second one would get some long thoughts about being flagrant.

Dave,

The crowd in 2 is awesome and I really like the action capture in 1 and 5. Would love to see some strobed images. ;)

Thanks Mark. And yeah, me too. I'm just not sure of the logistics of getting my 2 400ws strobes mounted, where to mount them, whether or not the school's AD would approve, when I could test them, etc.

The kids (local HS) I shoot for and their parents are really happy with the shots I get. Plus, this will be my last season as my HS senior will graduate. I shot football as well and do the basketball seaons, then done.

It's possible over the holidays that I might give it a try. If you have any ideas on how to get a couple of Elinchrom D-Lite 400 strobes mounted, I'm all ears!

Thanks for the explantion. The referees did have a short conference on the court and decided to let the player remain. This was the second in which the player grabbed and held #22, both of which resulted in #22 being dragged to the floor.

Guess that's what happens when linebackers also play basketball!
