I am just so amazed at my 5DII using the "automatic" mode. Before getting this camera I had 30D, 40D, 5DC, and I always shot in Manual, then did all of my processing with CS3. Well since getting my 5DII I can no longer do that in CS3 so while I wait for my upgrade to CS4 or Lightroom I did some test shots just shooting JPEG's in Automatic mode and have been quite pleased with the images right out of the camera. :D I will still do my major shoots in RAW+JPEG just to be on the safe side though.
Just wondering if anyone else were thinking this way.

Why wait for your upgrade? Can't you download the latest version of ACR or LR so that it will then have the support for your camera?

Never shot in anything other that M/Av/Tv so I wouldn't know....although I did use green box for a laugh last night for 1 pic with my 7D...it was awful!

Hi Brian - glad you're happy with the MKII.

I only have the 5DC and it too will work quite well in Auto, but for the all the social event and wedding work I do, I really do need to shoot RAW in Manual mode. Between white bridal gowns, black tuxedo's, and the use of flash, I find that too often the camera can be "tricked" into giving unexpected exposure results. I'm not saying you can't get great results and I'm sure the MKII is even better, but for what I do Manual works best.

I also do a lot of urban landscape and fine art work and Auto rarely serves me. My end vision is almost always different than what the onboard meter is doing unless I intentionally expose or underexpose for certain areas of the FOV. - Stu

With all that time you're saving, can you post a few pictures for us to share?

Haha, yes it is! But my point is that I shoot alot in club scenes and some nights I shoot 200-1000 photos, and if they are great right out of the camera then why not? Like I said, I will still shoot M for my more serious events.

Just to say, I'd strongly recommend that you install the Canon Raw processing software Digital Photo Professional (DPP) while you are weighing out your options for upgrading.

DPP has gotten quite a good reputation for being a fast, easy and effective Raw processor, and can even be great for someone who typically uses Camera Raw or Lightroom. I'm a long-time Lightroom user but have DPP and use it a lot for quick conversions for different things. One big plus is that by default it uses your camera settings for a quick "like the jpeg" conversion, and then you can change things around as you wish.

The alternative to all the above is to use the DNG converter from Adobe that will handle the 5D2 -- you can set it to produce files that work with CS3 ACR.

And, yeah, I've heard that the 5D2 meters well, meaning that Auto can produce nice results. The downside to me is total lack of control of anything, meaning not just challenging exposure issues but also struggling with the automatic focus point choices and not being able to control Aperture/Depth of Field would suck big time for me. P would give you more choices. Just sayin'.

Just saying this is a GREAT camera, even in Automatic mode, which will work out great for for alot of my shots.

I think everything is relative. If the camera takes better pictures then you do, then you just need more time developing your skills.

But to say the camera takes great pics in Auto is kind of like saying your new race car gets great fuel economy if you keep it under 35 mph and accelerate slowly.

Personally, I'd like to see a shot or two from a 5Dii in 'auto.' Can you post any?
