These are not 2 different crops. I took 2 seperate photos, but I can't decide which composition I personally prefer, so I thought I'd ask for input.

both shot with a 40D and a 24-70 2.8 @ 24mm f/16 1/200sec ISO 200

Thanks to everyone in advance for your input, it is much appreciated

I agree on both counts. The leading line is more apparent in the vertical crop and pulls the viewer's eye through the frame. I could even overlook the lack of a solid foreground element if there had been something more conspicuous/prominent in the background.

"I can't decide which composition....."

You can't really consider composition until you have elements/objects in a shot IMO.....with that said, there is nothing here other than some pleasing texture in the field (grasses) which has not been brought out by the lighting and/or post processing.

The portrait view gets my vote as the subject is much more obvious.

I wouldn't feel compelled to choose between them. Each composition works in its own way. What I would do
is set white point in the clouds and a selective color adjustment to reduce the blue in the shadow areas of
the clouds (but not in the sky). I also sharpened with Topaz Detail. Very nice photos!
