The only reason I ask is I've seen a rather large influx of 50 1.8 and 50 1.4 lenses for sale on the forums lately, and this usually only happens if something is being replaced. Is it entirely coincidental?

Christmas is coming. I think people are just cleaning out lenses to buy something better. I really doubt that the average Canon shooter has the inside scoop on Canon's Marketing Strategy.....

That would put it in about the same league as the 200mm f2 as far as size and price! :)

As much as I wish for a new 50mm, I don't think we will see one soon.

I would love to see a fast (1.4+) 50mm with a leaf shutter.

The shutter is in the camera body, though. How would that work on a Canon?

Probably with some sort of sync cable/clever lens communication.

The same way Phaseone does it.

What is the advantage of a leaf shutter?

As the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM (external link) was introduced in 2007 I do not see any need to have it updated with the next 10 years.

What about the 50mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.8, though? 1993 and 1990 designs that are both seriously outdated at this point.

Canon has not updated any of the non-L EF primes since December 2001. And that 2001 lens was the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM (external link).

DO lens not a valid example? Then the 2000 EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (external link) that was discontinued last year would be the last non-L EF prime to be updated. It was replaced with the 2009 EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro IS USM (external link).

1990 EF 50mm f/1.8 II (external link) & the 1993 EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (external link) are cheap lenses. Updating them would just increase selling price. With how strong the Yen is and how price sensitive those buying these two 50s are there is little incentive to update them.

So because Canon hasn't updated any for a long time means they shouldn't?

I know a redesign would possibly increase cost, but it would also make them more attractive to own. Right now, all Canon 50s are a significant compromise. All good in their own way, but they certainly ask you to take a lot of negatives with the positives.

Worse yet, the EF 50/1.4 formula looks unchanged from the FL 50/1.4.
