i could see this photo in a Rolling Stone interview - if it was someone famous

Haha I'll take that as a compliment, thank you.

um..i'm sorry to say but i don't like anything about this image...the lighting...the composition...everything is off...there is no focus...no clear subject or point...nothing is emphasized...no mood expressed... and i don't like how she's holding the cigarette or what she's wearing...just nothing of interest...i'm sorry. :/

i like smoking shots tho...i just like them to tell a story or capture a mood...i like the graceful lines of the hand holding the cigarette and a long neck...what were you going for?

I deffintly wasn't going for the smoking image you've described, it's part of a youth culture project. Nothing to be sorry for, I'm asking for your honest opinions :)

To be honest I hate it ahah, to static, to boring, lacks any feeling. Which was actually what other photographers I know thought too.

I think they're worth listening to. No matter how much you clean up the technical details (noise, color balance, etc.), all you have is a woman smoking in front of a mirror. That might have special significance to some people in some contexts, but I can't think why it might have general interest. I personally wouldn't spend two seconds on it in a gallery.

I am pleased with all the people giving me feedback and of course I'll listen to them as I have with other people I beleive would tell me what they really think so don't get me wrong. I'm just saying how I personally feel and how people I know (and trust to tell me the truth) feel.

Not to say your wrong to dislike this image but you could make any photo sound crap when you talk like "all you have is a woman smoking in front of a mirror", might be true but how unimpressive does ansel adams sound when you say "he has an image of a mountain" ect. Obviously I'm in no way comparable to Ansel Adams haha, I'm just saying that said like that everything sounds kinda boring. The interest is in how it's done I guess. Not intended for a gallery either, I'm not aiming to be an art photographer (but I get the general jist anyway).

But yeah, seriously I'm not dismissing what you're saying :) I appreciate everyone taking their time to reply. I'm actually suprised no one picked on the green bottle cap (it might be hard to spot it's a bottle cap though), that's something I just forgot to fix up. I think it's terrible :P

It isn't a matter of words. It's a matter of images.

I agree, as I said earlier I didn't say what the purpose of this photo was straight away because images have to stand alone. I'm just suggesting the way that was worded isn't really the best way to give someone feedback because it would make the best image in the world sound boring. :P

You're missing the point. Put my critique beside your photo. Put your critique alongside the Ansel Adams photo.

How many do you suppose would agree that your photo is boring?
How many do you suppose would agree that the Adams photo is boring?

A more lively critique cannot rescue your photo. A "dull" critique cannot detract from the inherent qualities of the Adams photo. My words fit your photo. Your words do not fit the Adams photo.

Okay I appreciate the feedback but after this I give up on you, you're not reading anything I've previously said.

I don't why you think I'm critiquing Adams' photo -I didn't even mention a specific image- it was obviously put as an example to explain my point it that form of critique isn't exactly that helpful for someone. You could save yourself some time and not post because it doesn't really teach me anything, I already know I have a photo of a girl, with a mirror and a cigarette.

I do appreciate your time and effort but c'mon man, I really feel like you're trying to make this about whos right and wrong but I've obviously missed how it started. You're extremely hard to communicate with and I think you're in your own world or totally missing the point of everything I've said.

Callum I agree that context is very important to this image. To what Peano was saying, I think without that context what you have is ...blah blah bah..know what I mean? Having the youth context i think that changes i could see it as part of a set of lifestyle images pointing to youth culture. I think what it describes is the bleakness of being youth smoking crack. as one other poster put it, but I think it needs a litle more PP to make the idea of the image feel deliberate. Maybe correct WB and some crushing of colors Ill give it a try.......

CALLUMPHOTO.... Why does it seem so hard to believe that people do not like it? I agree with everything thats been said here. There really isnt much to this photo at all. Ive read your many in depth critiques on other posters photos (including mine) and its just peoples opinions. Some photos are hits while others are misses. This i think is a miss. No big deal.... Really.

I don't really think I've ever said differently, I have mentioned peoples opinions outside of this forum but I have been explaining constantly that I get that people don't like it and that's not a problem of course. I appreciate the time everyone has been taking to reply, thanks buddy.

lecherro: Thanks for the kind words and CC, the project is already done and dusted so I'll probably just leave it to float around the universe as is. Deffintely going to have a play eventually just for my own personal curiosity though.
