A one-lane street can accommodate only one car's width, yet the same street can let at least four to five columns of motorcycles move quickly. Everyone gets on the bikes in Hanoi, even if they aren't of legal driving age yet. Many students get caught by plainclothes police every day for illegal driving. Motorbikes are also popular for transporting goods all over the area. Everything gets onto the backs of bikes, including food, drink and live animals. And in Hanoi, nobody cares about rules when the police aren't around. People litter, spit, use mobile phones and drive on opposite direction lanes all the time on their motorbikes.

Dec 18, 2010 02:47 | #2 Even the elderly mount up on bikes, decked out in classic leather jackets and roll around the streets. A rider with a poncho is seen against the magnificent backdrop of the lakes and rivers near the border. A mother and child ride on a motorbike dangerously on the crowded streets without helmets. Even the police use motorbikes to travel within the cramp streets of Hanoi, preferring them over their own large police cars and caravans.
