Some quick shots with my 500D, please advise / comment.

#1 -- Nice light in her eyes, but I feel it could be sharper. Also, to me it has that "camera right in her face" look. I think it would be better if shot from further back with a longer focal length.

#2 -- I like it, but I would crop off some of that rather boring blank space to the left and get Santa out of the center of the image. Also, the focal point seems to be a little bit behind Santa.

Image #1: Straight-on shots of a person's face are rarely flattering, and as a rule of thumb, they should not be taken (However, like all rules of composition, it is a rule that can be broken under certain circumstances). If her head was turned a few degrees to the left or right, and her eyes looked at the camera, the image would be more appealing, as a portrait. (I am not saying that she looks bad in the image. She looks quite lovely. It is just a way to make the image more dynamic and interesting.)

Image #2: I agree with Rimmer and I found your revised version much improved.

Thanks guys; still learning more each day, hope my Nifty Fifty arrives before Christmas and I hope to get the 55 -250 tomorrow to expand the possibilities.

I think you will be happy with both of those lenses. They both work great for the money and can produce quality images. Keep practicing everyday!
