Today was a double first for me. I went out for the first time with my 500mmF4 and tried to shoot eagles for the first time as well. There were dozens of eagles at Alma. It was only 1 above zero but sunny. I need a lot of practice with the lens and BIF but I had a blast!:) I had a 1.4 on the lens and everything was shot handheld. It sure doesn't take much unwanted movement to get a less than satisfactory photo at 700mm. I guess 1/200th isn't quite fast enough for me. At only an hour away from home I should get out a lot this winter.

Congratulations on the lens, Ed. Shooting hand-held with that lens will take some steady nerves and a very high shutter speed. Even with my 400 mm lens, I try to keep the shutter speed at least 1/1600 second or faster unless I am using a tripod. I wish that we had some eagles around here.

WOW! That's a LOT of eagles. Good luck in handholding that beast, and congrats on acquiring it.
