Has anyone used this mount?

I was about to buy one for my nexstar 8se until I found out it was plastic. I have not been able to find a weight limit, even on celestrons site. I'm not sure I feel good about about attaching $2000 worth of camera and lens to a piece of plastic.

I'd be nervous too.
I haven't seen one of those scopes up close, but the image on the Celestron site looks as though the tube is attached to the mount with a dovetail. If that's the case, I'd be tempted to buy a camera mount with a dovetail and when you want to image, pull the 8" ota out and put the camera assembly in. You'll be well within the weight limits, rather than pushing them.
Usual disclaimers about imaging with Alt-Az apply.

Steve.

I personally wouldn't feel safe using that unit either.

When I had a SCT I attached a rail-type piggy back mount. It attaches at the front and rear of the optical tube assembly. A slide mount allows you to move the camera back and forward on the rail. This is helpful when shooting wide field to be able to slide the camera forward to get the telescope out of frame in the foreground, especially if you're using a dew shield. The rail mount having two points of connection are much sturdier than the single type you ask about. Here's what mine looked like:

With that said I don't know if I'd feel comfortable piggy backing anything too heavy on a one arm Altazimuth mount. It may create some balance/tracking issues and possibly stress the mount but I can't say that for certain since I've never tried. I would think as long as you stay well below the load capacity you should be fine.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to head out to the shop, crank up the plasma cutter and mig-welder and make my own. While looking at how the ota attached to the arm I noticed two tapped holes near the top of the arm. I attached my bracket here so the camera is mounted directly on the arm not the ota. I talked to celestron and they said the arm was designed for use with the ota and a camera. We'll see.
