Not sure what happened but my lens fell out. Just thought it was kind of neat to see the inside. Anyway it was a good excuse to go get that Canon 50mm 1.4!

The 1.8 has a reputation for not being very well built. Thanks for sharing the insides.

So far, it seems this has happened to everyone with this lens but me. However, the day isn't over yet!

I had a 1.8 before that I used with my XS. I sold it when I sold the XS. For 7D, I'm planning on waiting and saving up for a 1.4! 1.8 was great though! :)

Thanks for sharing - particularly as your first post :)

I recently picked up the 50 f/1.8 myself, and am disappointed to see this. How long had you owned it?

I had it about 4 months. I had the lens on my 7D in the backpack I got for the camera (seemed very secure and safe) I pulled it out at a party and when I tried to take a shot the front glass part made a sound like a stuck gear. I noticed it was sitting sort of tilted. I tried pushing the part that was sticking further out in gently and it just came loose.

I had my company Christmas party coming up so I quickly ordered a 1.4 off of Amazon. I noticed a significant increase in photo quality but I think it's also because I got a flash (Speedlite 430EX II) at the same time.

Supposedly you can just snap it back together.

Although I have not had this happen to my 50 1.8

Mine pops out once a month. Line it up and snap back together and even auto focus still works.

This happened to mine too.

Basically the focus element rotates a bit too much and and goes past it stopper. To fix i needed to remove the AF/MF switch (easy to do, its only stuck on with double sided tape) and then undo the metal stopper tag which is screwed in, with it undone but not removed rotate the focus collar a little and then retighten the screw, that stopped the focus collar rotating too much and stopped the lens front element falling out. I also applied a little grease to the slider parts of the lens which has improved the focus accuracy 10 fold as it removes some of the 'slack' and 'play' which causes the focus to be off.

Edit:

Looking again at your picture as it was a while ago i'm pretty sure the focus collar came out with mine as well so your fix might not be the same.

The 1.8 is built like a toy but if you look after it the lens will last............ mine has. Perhaps you're all too 'bullish' with the poor little nifty? ;)
