Although I've known about this place for a few years now, I just never bothered to go for a visit. There are a lot of tame deer from the many people who feed them.

So, on a particularly slow day watching the same birds at a local feeder, I finally decided to go for a visit. While there I counted more than a dozen deer including does, fawns and a couple of bucks. The deer are resident year round at that location, part of the National Capital's green belt system. Comveniently located across from the Hazeldean mall in Kanata, the old Quarry Trail has a nice population of very tame deer (well, the buck are less tame but still come close).

If you do a search on the web for "old quarry trail kanata" you'll find many other photos of deer from other photogs including this one: http://www.flickr.com …y%20trail&w=8273371%40N07 (external link)

This buck photographed in the warm sunlight with a Canon 40D and 70-200 2.8L Lens and TC 1.4x. A good wildlife combo.

Very pretty. The lighting is great!

Thanks Maureen. After about 3 to 4 weeks of mainly cloudy weather including a lot of cold, I was very happy to see the sun. If the sun did come out during the week for a bit, that didn't count since I couldn't see it being at work :-) And it was mild. It was the perfect day to see the deer.

With the sun and resulting bright snow I did have to watch my exposure.

Thanks.

Have a look at this local photogs gallery/blog. You can read about this location and see some photos on how close you can get to the deer.

Thanks Karen. They're easy to get close to here. But you still have to expose.
