My wife due date is Dec 28, but the baby will be here any day now. Do anyone have any tutorials/tips with pictures that I can get some ideas from? I mostly use my umbrellas. Are they safe for a new born? Thanks in advance everyone.

I'd start Googling 'birth photographer' and 'newborn photographer' for ideas, FAST! But first, take the easy way and check out this thread.

You'll have to make up your own mind on what's safe for a newborn, but I'd consider taking your photography advice from photographers and your medical advice from medical professionals.

Its hard to figure out posing when you haven done it before. I offer you follow a few tips - wish someone had given them to me:

1. Give the baby a warm bath just before starting.
2. After the bath, feed the baby well.
3. Turn the heat up in the room to about 85 F.
4. Use natural light as much as possible.
5. Take your time with mommy, daddy and baby. Most of my shoots take 2 hours and I usually can give 20 plus shots. It may take 2 feedings and some waiting for the baby to fall asleep. Once the baby is asleep, you can pretty much do what you want to do.
6. Make sure you show their feet and hands / fingers.

The best time for posing is within the first 10 days or so because they are still very flexible and sleep all the time. Here are a couple of before and after shots. Keep in mind that the babies colour will vary greatly from each limb if they have the slightest pressure to slow the blood flow down, so that is why I love black and white.

All you need is a simple black fleece blanket.

Use a teddy bear to check your lighting before you put the baby into position....it really helps. Also, you can pick a location such as a high kitchen table so your not bending, just put a nice pad under it for comfort. You can have mom or dad hold the blanket to create the background:

GREAT advice Downs Photography!!!!

I'd like to add too... if the baby is STILL having a hard time falling asleep after all of Downs Photography's tips, place the baby on a micro fleece blanket or faux fur. He or she will fall asleep quick!

Very nice photo. I assume you use your 5D II and 50mm combo. I am asking b cos we are expecting in May 2011 and I am looking for a 50mm sigma to shoot our baby.

Absolutely was the 5D II. Did most of the shoot using the 24-70 f/2.8 with only a few with the 50mm f/1.2 - the space with tight. This was at 27 mm f/4, ISO 800, 1/60th using a tripod.
