Is it me or do all the new PC laptop displays hurt your eyes? They seem harsh or too intense. Colors are impossible to get right, even with a calibration device.

Can someone explain this or suggest a good laptop for editing, viewing?

Its tough to get laptops with good screens, most have TN panels & have all the issues you said
Calibration helps a bit though
No expert on mac's but I think there are a few available with IPS screens, some rare windows based laptops do too

Macbooks still have TN panels, just better ones. If you want a decent display, you're gonna have to buy a more expensive laptop, Apple or not. You'll probably have to hunt down some reviews, too...some laptops have a crappy stock display, but the upgrade is much better.

This should probably be in the Computers section of the RAW, Post-processing and Printing
area of the forums.

I have no issues with my refurbished laptop display or my Samsung 940BX desktop display,
as all feedback has indicated that I'm viewing them both accurately. Colors and all-what
are good to me, and others, apparently. Consider calibration.

How are LED displays? Are they any better on laptops than the TN displays?

I admit that I don't expect much from my present laptop, a 15" wide HP, but I'll also say I'm pretty happy with the quick conversions I do for Web use.

My now defunct "portable workstation" was a $2k Fujutsu and I got that put together for higher quality work, a 17" wide screen, dedicated graphics card, etc. I was pretty confident in it, and at that price I'd hope so!

TN and LED are not related as in, either TN or LED.

TN, IPS, S-IPS, H-IPS, MVA.... all have to do with how the pixels function. LED and CCFL have to do the source of light that is passed though the pixels

Apple Macbook screens are kickass. If you need windows on it use Bootcamp to install it.

I paid 4 times as much for my Macbook pro but for showing images to clients it's unsurpassed and worth every penny.

If you want a PC laptop as good as a Mac look in to Lenovo. They are just as expensive as Apple laptops though.

Lower the contrast if possible...

EDIT....I just got an 5-yr "old" LCD (a Dell 17") that when connected by DVI does NOT allow for adjusting contrast...wierd...I like the machine though because is swivels 90° and will become my data screen in the future when I get a wide IPS screen...As I write this I think I'll try hooking pc up to the VGA input and see if it's any better in analog!

Correction: look into Thinkpads :D. Lenovo's standard consumer line is total crap, but their thinkpads are BRILLIANT!

And honestly...I'm surprised I haven't seen a single person here with the W701ds. I mean, it's really a photographer's dream laptop. Quad Core, RGBLEDs, wide gamut IPS display, built-in calibrator, wacom digitizer, dual screens, a dock to instantly turn it into a desktop without plugging wires in like crazy... there isn't even the slightest bit of compromise in this laptop. If I was a pro, this would definitely be my laptop.

I'm not surprised. If you read the posts in this section on a regular basis, you soon see a composite personality that has no problem with shelling out thousands for photographic equipment, but is always seeking the minimum they can get by with for computer equipment.

And I agree with you... That's the ultimate PC laptop for photography, video, and graphic design.

LOL... there are only a handfull of suppliers for laptop displays.

Saying that Lenovo or Apple or HP has great, bad, awesome screens is false. Each vendor uses a variety of level panels dependant on the series, catagory, needs, price point, etc.
