During football season I provided shots to the hometown paper for both their print and on line newspapers. I received a call last week to shoot a wrestling tournament at a local high school. There were six mats but I only needed to get shots of the local high schools, Folsom and Vista.

I shot with my 7D, 70-200 f/2.8 L and 580EXII. I wasn't sure what my camera/flash settings should be so I used the same logic as I learned for flashed football. I tried to keep the gym exposed -2 and set the flash for +1/3 in ETTL mode. My iso changed from 1000 to 800 and I adjusted my f/ stop around, but settled on f/4.

Since this was my first try at wrestling, any C&C would be appreciated.

I don't think you needed ISO 800, especially at 70 mm? Gonna try and get permission to flash a wrestling meet on Tuesday.. planning on bouncing off white walls/ceiling with a dark wrestling mat.. but we'll see.. pretty sure there won't be anyone complaining but I don't want to shoot direct either (I don't have the stuff to take use flash 'off camera' yet.

The white "uniforms" look pretty blown out. Were you using direct flash?

Yes I was using direct flash. I tried to calm the whites down in post, but I still haven't mastered post processing.

i would of liked to see some shots panned out, they all seem cropped too tight for my taste.

But.... cropping tight reduces the inevitable poor backgrounds at a wrestling meet.
