Hey guys what should I know going from Rebel XT a 5D mark 2.

I'm reading the owners manual but I'm not done with it yet and just wanted to get some peoples thoughts.

Thanks,
Phil

I went from a Rebel XS to a 5DMII and the one thing that I needed to learn was that I could bump the ISO up to 6400 without any problems. Having all that extra light available to me took a while to get used to.

1st thing to know is that your 18-55 lens won't work. You won't have a flash (not that an on-board one is any good anyway). You'll need more CF memory cards. You'll be able to hand hold at lower shutter speeds to what you are used to - i.e. a 50mm lens will be hand holdable at 1/50s instead of 1/80s that you'd have needed with your rebel.

1. You will want to replace those 3 lenses.
2. You will be more paranoid about dropping it.

Phil _______________
Rebel XT Silver body. 18-55 EFS, 50mm F/1.8, 75-300mm.

To poor to afford better glass

Is it too late to send it back for a full refund?

It is too bad you did not stop by before dropping $2500 on a new body. If you had asked, for example: "Here is what I like to shoot, and I have $2500 to spend, what would you recommend?" I dare say nobody would have said "Get a 5D, keep your current glass, including one lens that won't work at all."

For example, you probably could have gotten a 60D with a few pretty good lenses or one very good one. for the amount you are spending on a 5DmkII. And though the 5DmkII is renowned for its excellent image quality.. you will find it difficult to make the most of it with a 75-300.

Well your wallet is going to get a hell of a lot lighter, that's for sure.

Everyone else's comments about lenses are spot-on. None of the kit lenses you have now are going to be any good. If you can't afford better glass, then don't buy the body. You'll be disappointed with the results.

OP, what you could do is sell your three lenses and add maybe a $100 or so more to buy a better all-around lens.

Welp...that 50mm you have is going to be his best glass...optically it will be just fine on the 5Dmk2...just dont really shoot much under F2...

I would seriously just walk around with the 50mm on it for a few days and what your wanting.....longer vs shorter...that will tell you were to go from there...
If you have $850 MORE... I would get a 24-105 if i was you. Then a $500 70-200F4 non IS and you will be good to go for a while along with you 50mm for low light stuff. Have fun and good luck.

I got it for under $1600 with tax as an open box item I saw a guy go into a local big box retailer and return it because he thought that he order the 1D, and then I'm back in there and it's on open box special.... Warranty wasn't registered or anything.

I'm going to sell the 75-300 and the XT with the kit lenes to get some new glass. But I think that the 50 1.8 @ 2.2 and higher is fine for this camera... it's awesome. I had been saving up for a full frame and new glass but I couldn't pass that up. I mean, would you?

Even at $1600, the price is pretty good for a practically brand new 5D2. Enjoy it! :)

Okay.. You have a plan.. that sounds good. I agree, the 50mm will be fine (but just the 50 from your current set). When I saw your signature, it made me think that new glass was not an option, and that would be a mistake, even with that discount... you could do better.

Yes your lenses are the resticting factor but one things for sure the centre of your 75-300 won't look any worse on the 5D2 than it did on the XT, the edges won't look as good but the centre sharpness will be exactly the same as the XT, if's you'd bought a 7D or 60D it would have 'looked' allot softer.

The centre of a 5D2 is exactly the same as the XT image, with the 5D2 you just have 'more' image.

Your 50mm will be allot nicer than on the XT.

I changed my sig, I thought it was funnier the other way but I guess people don't think that I'm going to upgrade or something.

I tell you what though this camera really shows all of the flaws of the 75-300.

I have been jonesing for one of these for over a year now, and I have never seen one go down that low, I would just like to say that I love the Live view and the video, I haven't even had it for a full day yet and I am just in love with it. It's not like when you build something up in your mind and then you get it and it isn't as good as you thought it would be. I guess it helps that I have used one before too.
