Sometimes the old school AF can actually be faster, though. Check user reports on the AF-S 50mm f1.4 vs the 50mm D.

I had the 85 1.4 D and I hated it because AF was inconsistent. It would focus one way under Tungsten lighting and behave completely differently under day light. My AF-S 85 G doesn't do that.

The 85G has the more consistent AF. Speed is useless without consistency. The "D" lenses just aren't that consistent, especially in tracking moving subjects.

From what I read, though, screw-focus speed also varies by body.

On the Nikon 135: cost would be double that of the 135L, for a lens reputed to have slightly / somewhat lower IQ. I write "would be" because it seems difficult to actually buy one. The price might be partly due to the fussy and superfluous DC feature, on top of the classic Nikon tax. Having recently rented a 135L I've got a bad case of lens lust. The promise of Nikon gear actually working out of the box instead of still being iffy after three trips to Irvine, however, has an undeniable appeal.

B&H shows 67 "US" lenses for Nikon and 70 for Canon on their site. Lots of selection from each manufacturer. I only need 3-5 lenses though, so either system works for me as far as glass goes.

With both systems, though, the numbers are smaller when one factors out the lenses that aren't available or which aren't worth using

To me Canon ergonomics is much better and easier to master and use while you look thru the viewfinder
Both Brands have a great line up with features that a few year back were unreal (e.g. clean iso 6400)
I think the 7D is the best all around crop camera and that the 1DIV is the best pro body for anything that moves - but Nikon is not far behind
what really matter is the "body" behind the camera not the camera body

This is the main point!!

I've seen so many great images from both camera, neither could be better or easier especially if its up to the user.
