5 Light Setup:

Self Portraits are so difficult. I used the 10 second timer, and shooting at 200mm gives you such a small margin of error to get yourself completely in the frame.

5Dmk2, 40D, 10-22, 50 f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L MKII, 28-135 USM, 2x 580EX II, lots of other lighting gear.

Here's a crack at the lighting, umbrella high and far left which is the "main". fill which seems to be pretty well equal to the main is right and a bit under eye level. A low and left back light hitting the hat, face and jacket. Another backlight to the right, it looks higher than the left one. Unless theres another one on the right for the hat I can't guess the 5th.

Either way it's quite flattering and nice lighting, I'm not the biggest fan of rim light myself so I'll say that straight up. Matter of taste really, it's distracting more often than not for me. I think it's a really good black and white conversion, very pleasing to my eye. Good job on that.

Pretty solid formalish self portrait, you have to do a whole bunch of shots sometimes hey? Expecially with longer focal lengths, I've had the same thing.

Thanks for the comments. You're pretty close with the lighting setup. Here it is:

Strobist: Einstein 640 Camera Right in 47" Octobox; Einstein 640 in 22 BD with 15 degree grid camera left; Einstein 640 with 8" reflector and 15 degree grid camera right and behind model for rim; 580EX II camera right and behind model with 15 degree grid as rim; 580 EXII with 30 degree grid aimed at wall behind model.

So, that 5th light is a speedlite with a grid that I'm using to make that gradient on the wall behind me.

I actually made this self portrait because there are so few photos of me, and my Mom doesn't have a recent (within 15 years) photo of me in her house. So, I just sent away for a print of this photo on metallic paper (18x12) and mounted to black gorilla-board, and I'm giving it to her as a stocking stuffer.

Ahhh I see, octobox makes more sense that an umbrella. I just knew it wasn't a softbox. I don't know how I missed the 5th being a background light! Super obvious.

I'm sure she will be pretty stoked with this one, I think it's really well done. Good work, do you make a living off photography?

Yeah. It's a hobby and I've only been doing this for 2 years. I've learned so much from everyone on this site.

Thanks for the feedback.

Based solely on this image I would have beleived that you're a professional so yeah, you look like you're doing well. No problem, hopefully a couple of other people respond now but in all honesty there's not a lot to critize. Have a good one.

Thanks so much. I just realized though that I've been shooting for 3 years, not two. Time goes by fast.

Anyway, I appreciate your comments, and I'm energized to go take some more shots. Thanks.

Why five lights? could this effect not of been done with 2 or 3? i'm new at this so i'm just asking, the lighting does look a little flat on around your face.
