I've read the stickies and searched, but everything seems to be about the best, sharpest, clearest, greatest value for dollar, etc.

I've been interested recently in half-frame 35mm film cameras, remembering also the 110 cameras from when I was young (in the 80s) and also checking out the whole toy camera/lomo/holga scene.

So I'm wondering, after playing with the Canon EF 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 II (a kit lens on a film EOS300 from the mid-90s) what is the worst lens available?

Is there anything truly awful from the likes of Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina?
The plastic lens adapters are selling for $55 or so on eBay but for a couple of dollars more there are Auto-Focus capable lenses out there.

Which have strong vignetting and poor wide-open characteristics??

(I'm guessing it's harder to make bad lenses on crop sensors because it throws away the rough edges)

I did a google search and found results from this very forum!
I checked again but the *in-forum search* only returns 6 pages of results, and none are the ones in the google search.. is that because they're old?

The 28-200 I once had pretty much sucked rocks.

Wouldn't even wish that lens on a Nikon user...

^this.
I've seen some shooter royally bonk a pic with what's known as awesome glass so unless its that 'fisheye adapter' type of thing it'll be too hard to determine the worst lens out there

75-300 is pretty crummy, especially in the non-IS incarnations... it's only really good as a projectile...

Is there anything in the 'normal' or 'wide' categories that's absolute trash?

The poll I ran a while ago was restricted to (then) current Canon lenses. The worst two were the 18-55* and the 75-300**. I know that this does not address your exact question, but it is of some small relevance.

*= the earlier lenses without IS
**= the fairly early 75-300 with IS is the pick of the litter of these.

No way is it the worst lens.

Thanks xarqi.
I've seen a bit about the 75-300 being quite rough, but there seems to be nothing as truly poor in image quality as the 'genuine' holga/lomo/toy lenses.

I think we have a clear case of price gouging and taking advantage of hipster fashion.
$50 for a new lomo, $50 for a EF lomo lens, or pay $5-20 for a mid-century camera?? I think vintage is cooler than plastic. (What happened to these same people being all enviro-conscious? Recycle ppl!)

Anyway, back on topic: Canon EF 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 II gets a firm but polite put down at the-dig-picture (external link)

optical shortcomings

low build quality

Color and saturation are not wonderful

I recommend, if possible, purchasing one of the [other] lenses
