Can anyone tell me if you can cut and paste with Gimp. I'd like to switch a couple of heads. :lol:I haven't downloaded the software yet so I don't know.
Thanks

Assuming you're serious . . . yes you can cut and paste with GIMP. GIMP is basically a poor man's photoshop. There's a learning curve, so switching heads will take some time to get right, but it is perfectly doable in GIMP.

Oh yes, very serious. My niece asked me if I could put her head in a Great White Sharks mouth. She wants to send it out as Christmas cards. Kind of gruesome I thought, but told her I would see what I could do. I guess I'll download it and see how much of a battle it would be to do. You mentioned switching heads, but what I want to do is put her head in it's mouth. Is that doeable?

Disregard my question. I downloaded Gimp and after playing with it, I gave up. I don't want to spend that much time trying to figure out how to use it just to do one silly task. It's kind of like Photoshop.......intimidating.
Thanks anyway.

Certainly. If you have a picture of a shark with its mouth open and a picture of her, you can cut and paste her head into the mouth. How the final result will look depends on how much practice you've had doing that sort of thing, and how much time you take to clean up details. The GIMP isn't entirely intuitive, but if you've had any experience with something like photoshop, you should be able to figure it out.

Absolutely no experience with Photoshop. I downloaded a free trial once and found it very intimidating. The free trial was for 30 days and I think I'd need a lot more days than that just to figure out how all the different features work. You almost need to buy a book on it, like Photoshop For Idiots.

I've used GIMP for a while; it's quite good once you've spent some time with it. Not sure if there's a simpler photo editor out there that would make your task simpler. I'm not aware of one since GIMP does what I need.

Good luck.

I just began to feel very comfortable using DPP and I really don't want any more on my plate than I can eat. Maybe down the road I may try a trial of the latest Elements, but to be quite honest, DPP does everything an average Joe like me needs so I'm not so sure that Elements would be any better quality wise or that it would be easier to use than Gimp.

Well, at this point, "just say no" to your daughter. But, I'd advise you to look at Photoshop Elements as a "starter app" if you ever want/need to do "serious" editing. Honestly, the task you describe is one of the more simple things you can do in an editing app like Gimp/Elements/Photoshop, but yeah, you have to get started somewhere, and yeah, you pretty much need, in the beginning, to get a good book as well as check out some online tutorials and such.

The good thing about Elements is that it's Photoshops "younger sibling" and so not only is much lower in price, it has a lot of good tools "passed down" from the big bro, and offers a bit simpler of an interface so the target users don't get so overwhelmed. Also, it inherits some of the support community from Photoshop -- there are a ton of books and online tutorials, help, etc, available for Elements.

The point is that at some point you will want or need to "do something" with a pic. There are free basic editors out there such as Picasa, but, if you still find yourself asking "How do I do this?" then you will need to bite the bullet. DPP has tools, and can produce nice results with those tools, but then...

OK, I'll take you up on that. Here is the shark and the pic of my niece who needs her head in the sharks mouth.

Hmmm...there is something "fishy" about that, isn't there?
