Cropping Discussion

I've been compensating on photo composition lately. I have joined the local chapter of the Professional Photographers Association ... and ... they "seem" to harp on the "rule of thirds".

I know composition is a personal choice, but wold like some dialogue on tips others may have to their composition approach.

There are psychological reasons for the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Mean. And most people would say rules are made to be broken. And sometimes they are. Just have a good reason to break them. I always start off using the rules, but then re-compose to see any another way would be better. As your "eye" develops, you learn when the rules work and when they don't.

The problem with the PPA is that they Harp and charge the full thirds for it.
PPA is for photo want-a-bees like modeling schools for model want-a-bees.

It really just depends on the subject and its surroundings along with your personal taste. The only advice I can really give is to look around beyond your subject and see how those things fit into the frame.

I very rarely shoot a photo that is not cropped in some way.
