I have CS4 now and will be soon upgrading to Adobe's Design Premium package, which includes CS5 Extended.

Wondering if there's anything I should be aware of before installing. I'll be installing from disks after they arrive by Santa's courier.

Because it's an upgrade, it will look for my old CS4 software? So I shouldn't uninstall CS4 before installing the new package?

What should I save out of my CS4 before installing? I have various Actions loaded, as well as Imagenomic Noiseware.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. When I installed CS4 I had various issues that took several days to resolve. Hope to avoid that this time round.

Leave CS4 installed until you know everything works after the new install.
You'll need to move over any actions, plugins, filters, etc. into the new install.
Another thing you should be aware of is now that you moved up to a package, you can't just upgrade one of the components in the future--It's all or none.

I had wondered about the "all or none". Good to know.

Actually, I get a window like this from Adobe Updater:

I think Merlin is talking about future upgrades, not the updates that Adobe gives freely.

Yup. I'm talking about the future upgrade to CS6 packages.
Once you have a bundle, you can't just upgrade Photoshop to CS6 and leave the rest at the CS5 version.
You have to upgrade the whole bundle, which costs substantially more.

True, and quite annoying. However, he should be able to upgrade from PS CS4 to PS CS6.

Frank is right, since the OP still owns PSCS4.

I'm using the CS4 for the discount to upgrade to the Design Premium package, so shouldn't be able to use it to upgrade to another version of CS only.

Yesterday, out of curiousity, I checked the upgrade cost of Photoshop Extended to the new Extended vs. cost of upgrading the Design Premium package. $299 vs $699. Considering the quantity of packages being upgraded, an additional $400 to upgrade all isn't too unreasonable.

It would be nice to be able to upgrade just one or the other, but not a deal breaker IMHO.

Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop Extended and Acrobat Pro are all useful to me, the others not so much.

I'm more worried about installation going smoothly ... installing Photoshop CS4 was a royal pain in the butt; took lots of time (over a period of 3-4 days) with Adobe support people but at least they were fairly timely with their response emails. Hopefully this time because there is an Adobe package running well, the new ones shouldn't have the same issues.

According to John Nack (first link) you can:

Q. If I upgrade Photoshop to the Suite, and later I decide I want to upgrade just Photoshop, can I do that?
A. Yes. As long as you still own that earlier copy (say, PS7) and have the serial number, you’re golden.

Thought I would give a quick update.
New package loaded with no issue whatsoever. Perfect!

Also ... already liking CS5 over CS4. Lots of new utilities that make great use of my Wacom tablet. Love that! During only a couple of days use, I also notice improved selection with the magic wand ... amazingly accurate. Not sure why. Also, CS5 Extended sure loads a LOT faster than CS4. Haven't had much time to do much more than play a few hours here & there. Lots to learn!

Now just have to get around to trying all the other programs, and getting refamiliar with Illustrator and Dreamweaver.
