I have CS5, I want a book that teaches me everything, not only for editing pictures but making things too.

I don't think ANY book can teach EVERYthing about Photoshop. It's too diverse. What are you looking to do? Check out Youtube. There are tons of vids there, and tons of tutorial Photoshop sites online too.

I would really like a big book that teaches me the basics, and I would like a book because I like something I can reference and something I can physically touch.

I would suggest any of the Scott Kelby books. I have his Photoshop CS2 book and I always go back to it as a good reference book.

Ok. I can understand that. I haven't actually had to buy a book though in 10 years or so.

Here's a great magazine that is downloadable as a .pdf. Every issue in the archives to can download and is FREE. Don't neglect online stuff though. Its just so much easier for authors. Most tutorials can be downloaded too.

I love Scott Kelby's books, and recently subscribed to his on-line training courses, all worth their weight in gold.

I'm like you I believe. I love something in my hands to read. But haven't been conveniently near any photography bookstores in a long time. When I worked downtown (chicago), i was probably buying two 3 a week, AND subscribing to the magazines ... Popular Photography, Shutter, theres another one I can't think of.

I always hear about Scott Kelby and he seems to be spoke of highly, the only thing I would say is I've heard he has bad file management and stuff so when it comes to file management and workflow I HIGHLY recommend "The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers" by Peter Krogh

If you're into magazines, look for Photoshop Creative from the UK.
Best Photoshop magazine I've found ... love it ... refer to my back issues all the time.
It ain't cheap, not many magazine vendors sell it, but it's well worth the trouble and expense.

I'll say that for a "big" book to use for reference, you may want to look at Martin Evening's book:

http://www.amazon.com …rofessional/dp/0240522001 (external link)

Like Kelby, he puts out an updated version for each release of Photoshop.

Kelby books are great for a "quick start", chock full of tutorials. Evening books are more like "text books" that have more technical depth.

Get them both! Just know that Photoshop is a "deep" subject -- like has been said, one book will only scratch the surface, but those two are a good place to start. Play with the Kelby tutorials, and plod through Evening's depth of coverage and you will go a long way.
