Canon Meta data

Quickee question for those more experienced than me.

I wish to include my name on the meta data of my files, pref RAW files. Im not interested in removing data so much.

Is it possible to do this with the supplied software from Canon? E.G DPP?

I seem to be going around in circles a bit.

I haven't actually gotten around to doing this, but you can use the Canon EOS Utilities to have the camera write your name into the metadata automatically when you take the shot.

Otherwise, software that has metadata capabilities like Lightroom, will often save metadata to a sidecar until you convert to a jpeg.

There are only a few apps that can actually edit Raw metadata effectively and are not too common.

So, I'd check out EOS Utilities -- if you have the disk that came with the camera, or if you have DPP installed, it's pretty easy to get the latest update from Canon and install it.

Yep -- the EOS Utilities software will allow you to put in your name (and even some "Copyright by..." text if you like). It takes ~5-seconds to do it.

Tim, does EXIFer "operate" on Raw files directly? It looks like it actually only writes to a jpeg, or maybe a jpeg and tiff.

Adobe Bridge has the capabilities to add a name and copyright notice to the metadata.

Jpeg. RAW files are read only, but things can be added to the metadata xmp file, or probably directly to a dng file.

ExifToolGui can edit the following fields (as seen in screen caps below) in RAW file Exif:

Yeah, this came up a few weeks ago and someone had some software and changed some Raw ITCP info, pretty cool -- of course you can do it in a text editor as well, but it can be messy, and I wouldn't want to try to put in a user name/copyright info in there in just a text or hex editor or I'd likely ruin the file entirely!

I saw that. In practice though I see no need to change exif on raw files, since they're the negatives and are never sent out. Setting it on jpeg files make far more sense.

Yeah, I've never even considered it except when questions come up here.

'Course I've never written my name into my camera, either -- I guess I'm not geeky enough!

My Canon cameras had my name embedded, it takes about 10 seconds with the Canon software, the same one where you sync the times. I don't know if i've done it with my new cameras.
