I got bored last night, so I decided to get some more practice with my new 300d. I am truly a beginner when it comes to photography and would appreciate any suggestions anyone at all might have to offer. I also just want you opinion on the photos themselves. Thanks ahead of time. :)

Great Pics! Especially #3 with that post in the foreground. I might have moved slightly to get a little more distance between the top of the post and the bridge , but that is just me and I don't know what else was around. (More likely I'd have seen the pic afterwards and thought bother - I'll go back and do that again sometime ;) )

#1 and #2, it might be my eyes, but it looks to me as if the camera was not level, the buildings seem to be leaning slightly. There are spirit levels available that will attach to the flash hotshoe to make sure the camera is completely level. I don't think they cost much - might be a helpful addidion to the camera bag?

Thanks for sharing them and keep up the GREAT work.

Very nice photos mate. Watch for dirt marks on the lens though. All 3 pics have slight dust spots. You could easily photoshop them out. Otherwise top pics. I can't realy choose a favourite cause I like them all.

Great eyes! I noticed the dirt after I had posted them up, and I think it was some dust on the mirror. I got it off last night. I will probably photoshop that out. Also, the ground was so unlevel, and I did what I could to get the pictures level, but I must not have done enough. Now that you mention it, I see how unlevel it actually was. I'll see what I can do next time.

I also noticed some blue and red dots, probably about 5-8 pixels big throughout the photos I took. Would this be attributed to the long exposure times? Is it normal?

Seth,

I really like your shots - great perspective on a common subject - expecially like #2. You can level these shots with software by rotating and cropping to get your horizon line straight - what are you using for processing? It's pretty to do in PSE 2 that came with your camera. I am a member in a camera club here in Louisville - PM me if you are interested in info about our meetings, etc.

Just keep shooting and visiting this forum and you will learn lots...

Great shots indeed! I love the inclusion of the foreground objects. That very cool.

However, you've got some spots - you have to clean your lenses and/or sensor. And they seem a little too over-exposed to me - but maybe I just think that night shots should be dark, so take that with a grain of salt.

I must say that I'm looking forward to more!

Your's > mine. I will have to practice some more. I still have the kit lens and will for a while. I noticed a lot of blue/red spots on my long exposure shots as well. A dirty sensor would cause this? I just got this camera a week or so ago, so I am still learning a lot. I appreciate the comments greatly and will take your advice into consideration. I am a beginner to all of this photography and hope to improve, and I'm sure I will being here on this wonderful site.

Also, I am using PSCS2 for editing. I just got it a few days ago, so I'm still learning all of its features and what they even do.

Thanks for the comments!

You have a few dark spots - see upper right of your photos - that do look like dust on the sensor. This is different than dust on the mirro which will not affect your photos. There are ways to clean this but it is tricky and you have to be extremely careful. Do a lot of searching on this forum before you try anything like this.

Since you have only had this camera for a week I can you maybe take it back and exchange it? If these spots were there after only a few days it is likely that they were there before you purchased it. Also, the red and blue dots do not look normal - could be a problem with the pixels on the sensor chip - although I am certainly no expert on this. I don't know how dust on the sensor could cause the pixels to change color and show up as red and blue dots. Where did you get the camera?

Got it from someone on ebay, so there is no returning it. The dark spots are from dust that was on the mirror I believe, because I haven't noticed them after I cleaned it. I have read in another thread that these "dead pixels" are normal for long exposures, but I really don't know. Those shots were 20-30 second exposures, and the red/blue dots got worse with my sharpening, and noise reduction.

I will try some more shots sometime and see what they look like.

These are very nice pix, except for the minor issues of slight horizon tilt and dust on the sensor. I'd be more worried about the red dots, as I suspect they may be "dead" pixels on the sensor. Try cleaning it, but that may not fix the red dots.
