And again time has a way of weeding out the Biebers. ;)

Its a pretty good bet after 200 years if its still considered by most to be art (Beethoven) then it probably is. Ya think Biebers will still be in the conversation?

Yes, well time can certainly serve as a worthwhile filter. That said, upon my worldly exit, as much as I would like to find God with a book of absolutes confirming that in 1984, I was indeed correct in arguing that the Velvet Underground was far greater than Huey Lewis & the News, I’m afraid that the taint of subjectivity continues to complicate matters.

Anyway, I’m out of here...but PM's are always welcome!

:lol: And you were for sure right about that and I thought in 1979 that Apocalypse Now was much better than 1941 and I would also guess that history proved me right.

The simple fact that this woman has garnished so much attention on photography forums such as this and other's all over the world is a testament to her genius and supreme talent.

Absolutely agree.

If you don't think her work is brilliant.......then take a look at the slide show and article in The New York Times: Click here to see it (external link).

**-NOTE-** Make sure you view the slide show at full screen.

Please proceed, Governor.

So George W. Bush was a supreme talent and a genius leader because he garnished so much attention on political forums? I find your logic a bit simplistic.

The difference would be that Bush was President of the United States of America and Vivian Maier is an artist.

Maybe this will assist you in understanding her brilliance as an artist: Click Here! (external link)

her work is quite strong.

That's the bottom line IMO. And most important.

Is there any word on who is doing the developing of her images, for as good as they are, I wonder how much better they could be.

haha cool if this is true, from one of the comments on the ny times article (slide of the lady with the mink scarfs, notice the heads on there):
Slide #12 is my aunt!!!! Amazing. I love the work, so imagine my surprise as I am working my way through the images and find her there. She passed away over 10 years ago. It's such a gift that she's part of this fabulous work.

I thought they were interesting... seems like other photographers are the worst critics...

like they say, everybody's a critic. I love her work and street photography. I find most of her work on the blog just absolutely beautiful. Some people are rather harsh with their comments and I'm not blaming you for being blunt but to be honest, these are better than A LOT of photos people throw up on flickr. She definitely has an eye for these things and she captures the mood and the atmosphere of her time. It takes a lot of training and practice and I believe some of her photographs compare with Bresson's and other famous photographers out there.

I just found a video about her and her photographs and it is spectacular.

I didn't read through this thread to see if anyone posted the video, but here it is:

Just fantastic stuff, and I'm normally not real interested in street photography. IMO, she ranks with Frank and Winogrand. I wonder who did her prints? Adams-like.

do all these street photogs become recognized after their lifetimes or were a lot of them recognized in their lifetimes? if after, doesn't the historical factor of the shots play more of a part in being recognized? if someone were to shoot similar shots today, i don't think they'd get much recognition. but then maybe 50 yrs down the road, someone might see them and notice them because they see how much has changed.
to me, the history is the biggest part that interests me in these type of street photos. but i have no photography background at all so don't really know all the technical aspects of what makes these great
