Yes, many have and were recognized during their lifetimes. Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White, Helen Levitt, Roy DeCarave, Bruce Davidson, Danny Lyon, Bernice Abbott, Bruce Davidson, Gary Winogrand, Lee Freidlander, W.Eugene Smith, this list could go on and on with the king being Henri Cartier-Bresson all had incredible careers during their lifetimes. I think they all have books some many books and have had major exhibits. In fact Vivian had books by many of the greats that were found in her personal belongings.

All the ones we know were pretty much recognized during their lifetimes--not necessarily lucratively, however.

Maier is one we simply didn't know. But John Maloof needs to find someone to professionally handle this material: Process it, classify it, edit it, and promote it smartly.

Have you ever seen John Maloofs work?

I just love this shot. Check out the repeating shapes of the checks on his shirt and the shadow on the pole and a truly Bresson moment with the sign(just for dad) in the far right repeating the shape of the guy walking with the check shirt and the bag. BRILLIANT shot.

She has some great pictures, to bad she's not around to defend herself from the people who are knocking her work.

Out of the pictures I saw, she looks to be a good photographer, but how many pics were looked through to get those? If there are 100,000 photos, and only a thousand turn out to be good, she would be batting amateur. Time will tell here. What makes these pictures special to me, is that she preserved that which no longer exist, and now we get to see what once was. I enjoyed every pic for this reason alone, regardless of their quality. Thank you Vivian Maier for capturing your memories.
