Ask and ye shall receive. This is by far the best side-by-side comparison I've ever seen. Unfortunately, it is only test-chart shots but you can look at the earlier mentioned galleries for those.

I have the 55-250 and the 70-200 f/4 IS.

The biggest difference between the two is focusing speed. If you're photographing things that move, the 70-200 will certainly help. USM focusing is lightning fast - my keeper rate for outdoor sports went up significantly when I got my 70-200.

Contrast and colour is also better with the 70-200, although both these can be corrected in post-processing for the 55-250. Build quality is also better, although on the downside, this makes the 70-200 a much bigger and heavier lens.

Personally, having tried the experience (with a 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS), I wouldn't now buy another lens in this range without IS, and I wouldn't swap my 55-250 for a non-IS lens regardless of the other benefits. To me at least, IS makes a huge difference in many situations.

Don't underestimate the 55-250 - it's capable of producing some terrific images. Even when I got my f4 IS (after saving for more than a year to get the IS version instead of the non-IS), I still kept the 55-250. It's a very nice little lens.
