I have the 200mm 2,8 L and a x2 teleconverter seems a viable alternative to a 400mm lens.

Will I get the same image quality as from a comparable 400mm 5,6 lens?

Chewie:Yepp the effective aperture will be f5.6, so the AF will work with a 2x extender on a f2.8 lens.

Colorblind: Nope.. the 2x extender will make the picture a bit softer than say a EF 400/5.6L. However an EF 300/4L with the EF 1.4x extender would be hard to tell the different to an EF 400/5.6L.
