Hi!
I spent tha last week searching for a wide angel prime. Without luck...
I would need your help to find a lens with focal lenght of 17mm or less- considering that I use screw-on ND filters.

I would like to have all the advantages that a prime lens gives, like really sharp corners with minimal chromatic abberation and very low distrosion.

Canons 17mm tilt-shift would be nice, but it doesnt fits in my budget (about 660€) and you cant use filters with it.

Could someone suggest a lens, please?

Thanks!

You have three requirements

- Super wide angle
- Great image quality
- Low price

Problem is, you can only get two of those at the same time. :)

Quality ultra-wide primes are out of that price range. Personally, I would stick with a short ultra-wide zoom like the 17-40L. That lens is reviewed fairly well and any CA you do get can be easily removed in PP.

Just my 1.5 cents.

Full frame or crop sensor?
The 17-40L mentioned above should suit your needs if FF, but if you're using a crop sensor, you should go for the 10-22mm(16-35 equivalent).

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

why not tokina 11-16? its been compared to 6 primes in 1, and fits all the categories you mentioned except its a zoom not a prime :)

Hey, thanks for the posts!
I was also considering the Samyang 14mm but the down side is, that I cant use filters with it.
I have a FF camera. Also own a 17-40 lens, which is really great, but the corner sharpness and CA isnt the best (maybe just a bad copy) - so this is way I was wondering to ask for any other solutions.

Modern post processing with lens profiles, such as in Lightroom 3, does away with the CA problem. That might be cheaper than a high-end lens, but will not affect corner sharpness of course.

Ok, granted its the Christmas season, and granted that there is a lot of eating going on, but yet, I'm not quite so sure that the angels will really be getting that wide... not quite sure about the lift capacity of their wings, ya know?

:p

Pardon the bad humor here,,, heading towards stir crazy what with visiting relatives, etc. ;)

As to what your intentions are, being you are shooting with a FF, then unfortunately the Tokina 11-16 is not for your needs. Likewise, I would agree with what Anders Östberg and others have mentioned, as recommendation from me would be continued use of the 17-40 also - given your desire / need to use a screw-on ND filter too. Good luck.

Those angels are of prime quality so I am sure their wings are big and strong enough to lift their wide bodies :p

There is also the Zeiss 21mm if it's is wide enough for you.
