what would you do manfrotto 496rc or vanguard 250?

I am torn between both ballheads as they are relatively the same price on amazon. I will be using my 20d with a 100-400mm so both should be able to handle the weight. I get more bang for the buck with the 250 or take the risk away and go with the 496.....what would you do?

regardless of which one you get....change out the clamps to a RRS quick release clamp, put an L bracket on the body, and a plate on the foot of the 100-400. As you move to other ballheads over the years, you can continue to use the investment in the clamp, L bracket and plate. We are changing our tripod and ballhead sets this Christmas. I will move our quick release clamps to the new ballheads that are in our stockings in the morning.

I purchased the manfrotto 496 rc as it was only $67 on Amazon. It looks like a solid head and I'm sure if I use it a lot will upgrade down the road.
