UPS guy just pulled up with my 24-70 in time for Christmas morning tomorrow. I could not be happier with this lens, I assume I got a good copy because this thing is as sharp as any of my Sigmas Primes were. But forget sharpness for a second, the Color and Bokeh quality are out of this world... better than anything I've owned so far. I always thought a Zoom wouldn't live up to my expectations... but this thing is as good as any Prime I've shot with in it's focal range. Aside from needing ultra Low-Light performance, I think this lens will be my go-to for most shooting.

Anyone questioning whether this lens can compare to your favorite prime, go buy a new one and try it for yourself. If you get a good copy like I did... I can't see how you could ever be disappointed. I don't really have time to upload any samples, but I cannot overstate how well this lens performs for a Zoom.

Good times :D

Congratulations!
I guess now you are no longer the guy who walks around with just a nifty fifty :D :p
It is true that the 24-70L is superior to most of the Canon non-L primes especially on a full frame.

Been thinking about trading my 24-105 for the brick lately. Maybe later this year.

My 24-70L is sharp as a tack...

I also have a sharp 24-70L which I purchased used from a professional photographer right after the 24-105mm f/4L IS came out. He was dumping his 24-70L lenses to jump on the 24-105mm bandwagon. Apparently many other photographers were doing the same thing because the used prices of the 24-70L took a momentary, but deep dip!

At that time I never saw a derogatory posting regarding the Brick! I wonder if Canon let their quality control slip a bit with later models because, I sure see a lot of negative posts now!

Congratulations on your purchase!

I have had a chance to own a few copies (I think 4 to be exact) of this lens over a few years and I will say that every single one of them was sharp. 3 of them were pre 2007 makes and one was a 2009.

Stepped down, I think they are close to the performance of the L primes but I don't think they would beat the L primes especially wide open. Nevertheless, even that's pretty amazing for a zoom though, especially one that's as wide and fast as the 24-70. I had sold mine to try some other options (including the 24-105L that I still own) but I keep going back to the 24-70L and I love mine!

Is a great lens if it focuses correctly. Mine isn't and had to send to Canon for calibration, which was a good thing. The hood is too big though. You can get a designer aluminum hood for the lens, half the size, for $75. Color and contrast is great and is L quality. AF in low light is good and acceptable, and is fast enough. However, the lens sucks so much power. My 1dmarkIII battery seems to be draining much more power than before using this lens. Instead of getting close to 2000 shots on a fully charged battery, I am getting about 1700 shots instead.

That's your battery, my 24-70 gets used a bunch on my MKIII and I've never noticed that the battery acted any differently than with other lenses. I have one battery that gets over 2,000 RAW images each charge and one that gets as many as 4,000 using the same lenses.

24-70 is wonderful, just wonderful.
