Hello,

Could you please list me some lens that will do better than the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 without IS? (The lens that came with my Rebel XT) Should I just get the new kit lens with the IS?

Budget: <$400
Length: I like wideness :)

However you can mention other lenses too if you'd like. I'll create a poll for everyone to vote on once I have enough suggestions...

hhhmmmm... well, the one with IS would fare better than the one without simply because at 55mm your widest apeture is 5.6...without IS, and in lighting anything other than full bright sunshine, you'll have to use a slower shutter or higher ISO (or both). Darker than Dusk, a tripod will be a must, or you'll just end up with blurry pics.

So, less than $400? Go with the IS version of the same lens. It should only be about $150/200.

As I see it though, your real options (if you want to "add" a little bit of potential opportunity) are either:
a) EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM $479.99 , or
b) EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS $499.99 , or
c) EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS $699.99

but in the end, I'd suggest you save for a bit, and increase your budget to $1000. You wouldn't regret it. In that case I would easily suggest :
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM $1,249.00

You may want to take a look at one of those ultra wides like Sigma 10-20. You may will be able to find a used one for around 400.

The Tamron Di-II 17-50mm f/2.8 (external link) is normally $460 -45 MIR. You should be able to find a lightly-used one that will fit your budget.

Based on what you have already, get the 18-55 IS, save up a bit more, and get an ultra wide since you like wide :)
Then you'll have the range covered from 10-200mm pretty much

Looks like you're getting the 18-55 IS then as it's the only one within your budget.

If that budget is out the window, decide how you stand on IS and maximum aperture, then choose one of:
18-55 IS
Tamrom 17-50/2.8 (maybe the VC version, maybe not)
15-85
17-55/2.8 IS.

just an FYI, I recently sold my mint condition (used less than 3months) 18-55IS on Ebay for $81 shipped. Shop around a bit and you should be able to find a similar deal
