Having updated my 7D to the latest firmware and travelling to Montreal I now find that I get error 30 ALL THE TIME. A few hours shooting today, family and some birds....had error 30 at least 15 times. I believe it is a shutter problem but it never surfaced prior to the firmware upgrade? Anyone else have this?

My 5D is 4 years old and still working....why can't they build em like that again?

Can you put the old firmware back and see if it goes away. Hope it's not the shutter, though.

Checked the firmware page, "Addition:
Note that cameras with the version 1.2.3 firmware (and also versions 1.2.0 through 1.2.2) cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version (such as version 1.1.0 or earlier)."

Damn.

Hmmm.. never heard about that error after a firmware update.
Does it occur with only one lens or with any lens you attach?
Can you try to re-install the 1.2.3 firmware? Or maybe do a full-reset on the camera?

Chances are few, but you can actually have a shutter dying on you.

Occurs with any lens and not consistenly. Sometumes 3 or 4 times in a row then 20 minutes later...weird. Will try a full reset. Cheers.

Yes, try the full reset and see what happens. I did the firmware update on my 7D and it's been great. Good luck!

Seems to be a lot of camera problems lately. I'm not saying it's the shutter but everything I have found says it's a malfunction related to the shutter. Hope you get it squared away whatever it is.

Probably best to reinstall the firmware off a fresh download from the internet.

Agreed.

After expanding the file on your computer, be sure to do a checksum. That is, look at the file's properties and make sure the size is the same as noted on Canon's site, in their instructions.

Also be sure to use a memory card that's been formatted and has nothing else on it.

You probably already know that you have to be careful not to press any buttons and the camera must remain on until the firmware update finishes.

It's also a good idea to do a full reboot. In case you don't know, that involves removing all the batteries, including the little silver one, turning on the camera without the batteries and pressing the shutter release button once (it won't fire, but this clears any remaining power in the circuitry)... then put the batteries back in. If you got a full reboot, you should need to reset the time/date, at least. You might need to redo some menu and custom function settings.

I have done this update (and earlier ones) on two 7D without any problems. I think most likely you got a bad update for some reason. If these don't solve the problem, I'm afraid it's back to Canon with the camera.

FWIW - I was getting Err 30 messages out of the blue on my 5DII (not related to any FW updates). From what I understand, if the error keeps happening, you probably have a hardware issue. I had to send my camera to Canon and from what I can tell from the overly cryptic repair order, they replaced a bunch of hardware/circuit boards in the camera. It works great now - may want to send your camera in, esp. if it's still under warranty.

If your warranty runs out in January, I would go to the nearest post office in Montreal and send your Camera in to Canon for repairs. Regardless of the shipping cost, it's worth it.

Error 30 today became error 40 and the camera no longer does ANYTHING. This camera already had a hardware problem with the battery contact parts and now this. I am really unhappy. Supposed semi-pro camera body.... :(

So sorry for your poor experience, I would recomend your phone calling Canon and getting the malfunction reported so there will be no debate about its failure date being in warrenty. They may send you shipping info, authorization, etc. Best of Luck !

I've just had exactly the same problem. Updated to version 1.2.5, the very next time loads of err errors. Tried a fresh update again, now it clearly shows err30. No problems at all before the firmware update. If it is the shutter, this is the second Canon camera I've had which has had a failed shutter. My 40D failed, and now it looks like my 7D.
