ef 50mm 1.4 lense

just got for Christmas - struggling with focus points - guess it takes alot of practice to get some decent photos - question - when I shoot I see a burst of lights in viewfinder

What do you mean struggling with focal points? Shooting at 1.4 takes some technique - you are shooting with such a shallow plane of focus that if you are not careful and move out of position it'll throw the subject out of focus.

Regarding the burst of light - is that with any lens? What camera? I haven't seen that before...

I believe he has the Canon 350D ..

that's what I mean - I'm having a hard time getting a decent shot that's focused
the burst of light - only does it with this lense on my old canon rebel eos
everytime I shoot it's like I see this burst of lights in the viewfinder - it's almost like when you shoot in bulb and move the camera - know how the image looks - that's kinda what I see in the view finder - just wondering if that is normal with this lense wide open

Are these the focus points lighting up? If so, you need to explicitly set the ONE focus point that covers the subject that you would like in focus.

no flash does not fire - not supposed to
and yes I tried setting the one focus point - read that somewhere
this is an entirely different issue - it's just weird - I totally see the image flash inside the viewfinder distorted - don't know how to describe it - images are ok - it just happens when I depress the shutter button
