Merry Christmas,
I had a call from a friend of mine who owns a 30D with a kit lens. She said that she could not take a picture - in Auto (green square). So I went over there to take a look. Tried it and yes, cannot take a picture. So I removed her kit lense and put it back on, same thing. I had my 7D along with the Brick (24-70), so I removed her kit lens again and put my 24-70 onto her body. No - could not take a picture either. Then to my big surprise, I tried to remove my lens from her body and the release worked but I cannot remove the lens. It is stuck!!!
Has this ever happened to anybody?????
I hope that CANON Canada can separate the 2!!!

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Elfie:(

Sounds to me like her plan worked perfectly!

In all seriousness, it's possible that what is going on is that one of the small screws on the lens mount of the 30D has worked itself loose. That screw is keeping the nice metal mount of The Brick from being able to work itself loose.

Unfortunately I don't know what to actually do about it and Canon actually has a published rate to remove a stuck lens. About UD$$350 if I remember correctly.

You could look at it this way... its her body that is stuck to your lens,,, and given that your lens is more valuable than her body,,, therefore, you've just gained another body! ;)

Seriously though - interesting that her lens could come off, and yours could go on w/o much issue. That is a bugger. Guess it wouldn't help (if it is a loose screw somewhere) that if could take the body / lens and "gently" shake it, at different angles... maybe just enough to get the screw to 'reset', so that the lens can come back off? Good luck!

Thanks for your help ShadowCaver!

All i need is another camera - lol!!

My friend's lens is an EF-S lens and mine is EF and maybe that made the difference. I have tried every possible angle but no way will my lens come out.
I guess i will have to send it to Canon.

Have a great day!

Take it outside in the cold and let it set. Cold contracts, maybe that will release the jam.

The problem is that since they're both made of the same metal, they'll likely contract together...

If you could find a way to safely make the lens colder than the body that MIGHT help...but, still, they're pretty close together, so they'd transfer heat from one to the other...theoretically, anyways...

Could it be that whatever the release button is supposed to release is plain broken? So your lens is locked in the same as any lens would be without the release button being depressed? (In which case no amount of hot/cold treatment, shaking or trying to work around a loose screw would help).

In this thread, they someone suggested slipping a very thin metal feeler gauge between the lens and the body. It doesn't say if this method worked though.

Thanks Lowrider for your comments!

I really appreciate all your help! That's what i love about this forum!
I don't think that the release button is broken - it feels it is working properly and it releases the lens - so the lens is quite loose. Right now i have it sitting outside (here in Canada it's cold enough - not bad today!!), so will see if that makes a difference.
Will keep you guys posted!!

So the lens can be locked into the correct position, and then be released, and partially turn in the mount?

That does seem like one of the camera mount screws has backed out.

Yes, you are correct about locked position and releasing.
I had no problem releasing my lens from my camera. My friend had a problem with her camera - could not take any pictures.

Thanks for the link - i just sent him a pm to ask how he resolved his problem.

Fingers crossed,
Elfie

SUCCESS!!!!

I just got the camera in from the cold and played with it for a few minutes and MY LENS came OFF!!!!

Thank you guys again for all your HELP!!!

I checked for a loose screw but could not see any problem. I don't have tools to try and tighten them - so it is going back to my friend. I put her kit lens back on and still cannot take any pictures. She will have to figure out how to get it fixed.

Thank you!!!

Elfie:)
