Let's discuss USM vs Sharpness in Digital Photo Professional.

Since they implemented USM in DPP I've struggled to find situations where it does a better job than the regular Sharpness setting does . . .It also seems to be way too strong. Like a strength of 1 in USM (with a small radius) seems stronger than 5 sharpness...It also seems to halo very easily, while sharpness doesn't.

On some images a setting of 3/1/3 or there abouts seems to do a good job, though. For most images though, the regular sharpness setting, set to about 3, is excellent. (Or I use ACR, but let's keep this focused on DPP, lol)...

Does anyone know what method the regular sharpness setting uses? Is it something other than USM??? Has anyone had good luck with USM in DPP (I use a Canon 7d)? Does USM in DPP being too strong mirror the experience others are having, as well?
