I bought some a couple of months ago and went through 4 holidays and a night club shoot and the little red light on my flash still comes on almost immediately on the original charge. I am more than satisfied.

What mAh are they rated? I'm using Duracell 2650mAh and they're ok, so I'm wondering what all the hype is with Eneloops. I'm thinking about getting some just to try them out.

When you buy Eneloop batteries, do they come with a charger? Thanks!

I purchased 2 sets & a charger shortly after I got my 580EX II & have been completely satisfied. I highly recomend them as well. They are 2000 mah, but they lose almost no charge in storage , recharge quickly, and seem to put out full power almost till the end when they need to be re-charged.

eneloops are rechargeables that have the idle lifespan of regular alkalines and the active lifespan ( and then some) of high mAh rechargeables.

I love mine and like the other poster I've switched the speedlite and everything else that takes AA and AAA to eneloops

They are nominally rated at 2000 mAh. I use the eneloop charger (which came with the package deal from costco)

Would I see a significant drop in performance going from 2650mAh Duracell's to 2000mAh Eneloops? One of the other posters here said they still recharge the flash fast even when nearing the end of the charge. I definitely would like that. You can definitely tell when the Duracell's are getting tired. As for shelf life, I don't care about that. I recharge everything anyway right before a shoot.

Overall, are the 2000mAh Eneloops superior to the higher mAh rechargeables?

Indeed... have been using Eneloops for over a year in our PnS cameras, flashlights, xBox controllers, etc.; cost more upfront, but they last,,, and last,,, and last. Only buggery thing is the charger - seems backwards IMHO re: the green light.

I saw an improvement when going from 2500 Energizers to the Eneloops.

You may come to like the shelf life 'option'. They are rated to have 80% of their charge remaining even after 1yr.

My energizers would seemingly last about 14 days before going flat.

You might want to look into either the LaCrosse or MAHA(Powerex) chargers. These chargers also feature modes for reconditioning and analyzing battery cells, and can effectively 'restore' cells to near-peak capacity. They are expensive, much more so than typical chargers, but they'll go a long way towards keeping your rechargeables going for a lengthy time.

Thomas Distributing (external link) is where I grabbed my Powerex charger and batteries from, and the charger actually restored a few of my Energizer AA batteries to a useable state after running them through the Analyze/Refresh cycle.

I might have to do that. The energizers last about half hour in my 580EX II. I am going to do some more research.

Check out some of the discussion HERE.
This is where I began to take batteries and chargers seriously, and it's the discussion that prompted me to spend a few bucks more on batteries & chargers. I've not been disappointed with my purchases yet, and the batteries and chargers are indeed of first-rate quality and longevity.

A large number of people swear by the Eneloop from Sanyo, with good reason, but just as many might suggest the Powerex batteries, and their chargers. There are other worthy batteries to consider at the same time, but consider how a charger/conditioner might extend the life of your own batteries. I've effectively 'restored' a few Energizer AA cells with the MAHA charger/conditioner I purchased, as well as enjoying the near-full charge that the Powerex Imedion batteries keep after several months of sitting idle.

Check it out, make the comparisons, and make your choice.
There's a lot to consider, but if you're comparing mass-market rechargeables to the rest of what's available, then it's no contest to me. I've landed on the Powerex Imedion AA batteries, and they're serving me extremely well so far.

I already had a MAHA 204GT and it works great.
