Ti1... need a vacation lens

I have a Ti1 with the 18-55 kit lens, which I do not like, and the 70-300 Canon IS, which I love. I would like to rent a lens for a Belize vacation. Will be beach/hiking in jungle/sailing/etc. Since i am renting, the price isn't a factor. I was looking at the 24-105 f/4 L, the 17-55 F/2.8, and the 24-70 f/2.8 L.

Any thoughts or advise?

I have used my 18-55IS or my 28-200 on vacations with good results. Price wise my ideal would be the 15-85 though.

I'd say the ideal vacation lens on a 1.6X body is the EF-S 15-85 IS. Between the three you mentioned, the 17-55 would be preferred for the wide angle.

This is probably a stupid question, but for the EF-S lenses, you don't calculate the 1.6 crop effect do you? Thats only for the EF lenses?
So on a EF lens like the 24-105 L, the 24 focal length would actually be 38 but on my EF-S kit lens, the 24 focal length is 24 focal length?

No, the printed focal length is the focal length no matter if the lens is EF or EF-S.

So the EF-S 17-55 and the EF 17-40 cover almost the same focal length ranges, and both will give the same AOV on your camera when set to 17mm.

The focal length is a physical property of a lens irrespective of the fact it is a EF or EF-S. The EF-S lenses have just a smaller image circle. The crop factor serves to compare the field of view of the lenses when mounted on a smaller sensor body relative to the full-frame 35mm format which is, by convention, adopted as standard. Hence you still have to multiply the focal length of your lens by the crop factor of your sensor to have an idea of which focal length would give an equivalent field of view in a 35mm camera, even for EF-S lenses. Of course, you will only have an idea about what that means if you have had previous experience with the 35mm format. Nowadays, more and more people get into photography through small sensor digital cameras so this convention, while useful for standardization purposes, is not always intuitive.

For a wide - normal replacement - it is hard to beat the 17-55mm 2.8 for a 1.6x. It's fast (2.8 and AF), sharp, and has a very useful range for a crop.
