Good shot. Where does this one rate on your scale?

Hi Jack - I can say that here, but not at the airport!!

This one rates highly on my scale, certainly at 9+ on a 10-point scale. Full body, good pose, decent lighting (about 1/2-hour later really started snowing and lighting really deteriorated), good eye contact, good view of both antlers, sharp, no distracting back-ground. Certainly my best image of this year. I would say that it is my second best elk portrait ever - best was back in 35mm days ('94?) - I still have some prints of that image, but have long ago lost the negative/slide. :(

This is 1 of 725 images shot yesterday. Out of 725, 29 'possibles', 4 'yes', 1 'oh yeah' - you are seeing the 'oh yeah' here. This is number 697/725. Ya just keep shooting, hoping for that perfect combination of light/pose/focus/composition/&c.

Disclaimer: This elk, and a few hundred more, are on a Wyoming Game & Fish managed feed-ground just about 1 mile from where I live. These elk are 'wild', not captive - they can leave the feed-ground anytime that they wish. However, due to WGF feeding them, they probably won't leave until sometime in April. In fact, most have to be forcibly driven from feed-ground come April 15th. I'm able to easily get within 50 yards of some of the elk, this one was probably 75-100 yards at the time of capturing this image.

There is a fence surrounding three sides of the feed-ground - but, it's there to keep the public out rather than keeping the elk in. For almost a mile, the main highway is within 35 feet of one side of the fence.

Faw67 - I was shooting with a Sigma 150-500, this shot was at 150mm.

May just be my calibration but looks a bit blown out around/underneath the elk... my only other thing would be to edit out the grass/sticks sticking through the snow in the background. My eye tended to dance around them after viewing the elk for a bit.

Great capture and pose though of a solid animal.

Vmann - Thanks for comments. I agree about the odd bits of grass poking out of the snow - those will be gone in the final 'for sale' image.

Interesting shot with the "white seamless".
I agree with Vmann, either bring the sticks in darker or blot them out.
